I first noticed the shadow near our bakkie around 5am.
It looked like a young woman, seated on a short wall, opposite a crime scene in KwaMashu's B Section.
A trolley bag lay next to her.
Only a short while earlier, gunfire had pierced the air - at a time when most neighbours would have been in their deepest sleep.
Two suspects paid with their lives for allegedly trying to murder a team of police officers.
One law enforcer was hit, but survived.
The woman on the wall appeared distraught.
Her face buried in her small hands; quiet sobs escaping through her fingers.
With daylight steadily nudging away the darkness, a rooster nearby was performing like he was at an audition.
Maybe he noticed my microphone and camera - who knows - but I could still hear the woman in-between the “cock-a-doodle-dos.”
Her body language made it clear she wasn't looking for company but I made a mental note to come back to her when the crime scene activity had settled a bit.
Later, when we eventually chatted just outside the cordon, I noticed she was wearing a beautifully-coloured skirt.
Perched on a step, next to a heap of beer bottles and rubbish, she still looked so well-put together - casual, yet elegant.
But it was in stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside her.
The night before, she had received a call from a man she was dating - the owner of the house.
He told her there were two men that would need to stay over, and she should let them in and make them feel at home.
She, too, isn't from here - she lives on the North Coast - but was in the city to look for work.
The Zimbabwean men arrived after 2am, dropped off outside the main entrance in a grey Suzuki.
They exchanged greetings in isiZulu but the pair was not particularly chatty with her.
She says she did as she was told; she let the men in, got them settled, and went to bed.
Barely an hour later, police were knocking on the door.
Although she was confused and in a state of panic, she complied with the instructions they gave.
During a search of the house, there was an exchange of bullets after officers were allegedly ambushed.
During our conversation, as she reflected on the earlier events, we tried to find out what line of work her boyfriend was in.
She wasn't really sure.
“Tenders," she guessed.
They've been together since 2020, although he has a wife and kids elsewhere.
Reality started to sink in as she opened up to us - and she began to worry about her phone that had been taken by police as evidence.
Now, there was no way of hearing back about a job she had applied for.
By 10am, the forensic pathologists had extracted her brief house guests from their awkward positions on the floor and transferred them to the steel shelves inside the mortuary services van.
"You can go back inside," one of the few remaining officers told her as the sound of the van's diesel engine faded away into the township.
With that, she was alone again - in a house where the stench of fresh deaths lingered.
No clear plan, no job, no phone - and the “tender-man” had seemingly gone to ground.
This was handled properly. We don't want soft police and we definitely don't need cops who cannot police. Why was he parked in the middle of the road? Kube umfake iBoot once

Videos of FarmWatch Chasing Hoedspruit CIT robbers
This is apparently footage from the recent shootout with community safety initiatives and the CIT guys in Hoedspruit.
The Cops involved in the Hoedspruit shootout with CIT tango's did NOT "run away" and many police stations still work hand in hand with capable community safety structures - don't let your hate for South Africa blind you. Get involved. Thank you @ConCaracal for the info.
The Hoedspruit Farmwatch released a statement:
"We would like to set a few facts straight - firstly Hoedspruit Farmwatch have a very good relationship with our local police and a large number of specialist SAPS units and we work very well in partnership with them. We are there only to support and strengthen their hands.
The police did NOT run away from the scene and were there from start to way beyond the end. SAPS on all levels did an awesome job and we are very proud to work with them. We are not sure who created this fabrication but irresponsible statements like this can have very negative consequences and can break down positive and vital relationships that we have spent years building. We ask everyone to please think twice before creating nonsense to just further purposes of sensationalism."
Similarly, Hoedspruit Farmwatch has very strict policies about photos and video’s taken on scene and we would just like to make it clear that none of the photos currently being shared are from Hoedspruit Farmwatch, but have originated from Official Sources instead or some of them are from general public who were caught on the edges of the incident.
Ig Maas (72), cattle and lucern farmer was attacked twice in one year. First by a gang of black men in his farmhouse near Hankey. They fired 5 shots at him, one in the leg. He emptied 19 rounds on them, and they fled.
Second attack a couple of months later, he shot and killed the attacker in his farmhouse.
IG says he always carry his pistol and farmers in South Africa must never get too relaxed, and always stay vigilant.

Three suspected CIT Robbers arrested and four killed during a shootout in Hoedspruit yesterday.
The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation members have arrested three suspects aged between 28 and 52 who allegedly ambushed and robbed G4S armoured vehicle near Hoedspruit on 20 September 2023.
It is alleged that on the date (20 September 2023) at about 16:00 the G4S armoured vehicle together with its escort vehicle were driving near Hoedspruit towards Tzaneen when they were suddenly ambushed by the suspected armed robbers who were driving in three vehicles (white Toyota Fortuner, white Ford Focus and white Toyota Hilux).
The suspected robbers allegedly started shooting at the escort vehicle until it came to a standstill and they disarmed the guards (driver and crew) of their official rifles and pistols. Unfortunately, the two guards were shot at and sustained injuries that resulted in the death of the driver.
It is further alleged that the armed robbers pursued the armoured vehicle while shooting at it until it stopped. The driver of the armoured vehicle and his crew were allegedly ordered to disembark the vehicle, disarmed of two firearms and chased into the nearby bushes.
The suspects allegedly used the explosives to blast the armoured vehicle and made off with an undisclosed amount of money. The Hoedspruit Farmwatch was activated and spotted the suspects’ vehicles driving towards Hoedspruit.
In an attempt to stop the suspects’ vehicles, they put the obstacles on the road that forced their vehicles to stop.
It is further reported that the suspects started shooting at members of Hoedspruit Farmwatch who in self-defence returned fire. During the shootout, four suspects were killed and one (28) was injured and arrested on the spot.
The other suspects ran into the nearby bushes and vanished. In the early hours of Thursday, 21 September 2023, suspects who fled were traced with the assistance of the Hoedspruit Farmwatch dogs and chopper until they were caught in a taxi that was travelling to Acornhoek and arrested.
The two injured suspects were found in possession of suspected stolen money.
The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation members were summoned to the scene. While processing the scene, an undisclosed amount of cash, one assault rifle and other firearms were seized.
The three (30) injured suspects are under police guard in hospital and they will make their first court appearance soon.
The Hawks are still searching for the outstanding suspects. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects can contact Colonel Motle on 079 886 6618 or contact the nearest police station.
