My request to Marathi brothers and sisters:
Before jumping to conclusions on such viral videos, please listen to the other side also.
Many times these clips show only the angry reaction, not the provocation before it. The person recording may have had some personal issue, then dragged in the language angle, irritated the employee, captured the reaction and packaged it as “Marathi hatred.”
Why would any sane Indian hate an Indian language?
If a railway employee genuinely misbehaved, action should be taken. But a 20 second viral clip is not the full truth.
Today every small argument is being converted into a language war, caste war or community war for views, reach and political mileage.
Society is already filled with too much poison. Don’t become emotional fuel for people who benefit from division.
Common people fight. Viral accounts get views. Politicians get material. Society pays the price.

“Jagannath Shankar Sheth, a proud Marathi, donated hundreds of acres of his personal land for Mumbai’s development”
As did Parsis, Jews, and Jains. Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy alone did £230,000 and funded over 120 charities…I won’t even do the inflation maths here, you know the number is staggering.
As for “modern Bombay,” how exactly do you even define the term? Modern in what sense? Wealth? Culture? Aspiration? Because if so…
Bombay modernized when a Jew from Goa turned a godforsaken island with nothing but mangroves, mosquitoes, and fisherfolk hovels into a grand Bombay Castle.
Bombay modernized when a Parsi merchant decided to give it its first modern civilian hospital, its first medical school, its first art school, and its first and only physical link to the rest of the country with Mahim Causeway.
Bombay modernized when an Englishman glued together tiny disparate islands into the monolith you recognize today with a Reclamation program that lasted long after he was dead.
Bombay modernized when a Baghdadi Jew built its first wet docks that would serve as the entrepôt for all the wealth that poured into it from both hemispheres in the late 19th century.
Bombay modernized when a Jain from Gujarat turned it into the economic powerhouse that it continues to be with Asia’s first stock market.
And Bombay modernized when a Parsi became the first to start trade with China more than half a century before Jagannath Shankar Sheth was even born.
The list could go on with Muslims and Marwaris but you get the drift.
Yes, Shankar Sheth’s contribution to Bombay is immense…top tier even. But to single him out as the “Maker of Modern Bombay” is just you acting out your personal chauvinism. Ideally one shouldn’t assign such titles to single communities but if you must, for every Marathi name you list, others could in a heartbeat list 4 non-Marathi names in response. The idiotic game could go on forever.
If you have the time.
