Udukk / Damaru : Decoded

Udukk has its own history and legends. From the selection of the wood to the final act of picking up the Udukk and holding it in the hand to play, there are precise rules and disciplines. Here is a glimpse into those disciplines.

You all must have seen and known that the Udukk is an instrument placed at the middle prong of the trishula of Lord Shiva. That is the origin, the source, the very root of the Udukk. It is Lord Shiva who is the creator of the Udukk, or rather, it first appeared on Shiva’s trishula.

After that, its present form was designed and crafted by Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Bharati together for the sake of Goddess Sri Vani Bhagavati. This is the Udukk form that we see today.

Udukk is a divine musical instrument. It possesses divinity at every level. The very shape of the Udukk is described as “Krishmadyam Vrithamagre” – meaning it is somewhat like a subtle, miniature form of our Universe. If you examine the shape of the Udukk, this will become clear.

Kṛṣa-madhyaṃ = narrow / slender / thin in the middle (kṛṣa = lean or narrow; madhyaṃ = middle or waist).

Vṛttam agre = circular / rounded at the ends or extremities (vṛttaṃ = circle or round form; agre = at the front/end/tips).

The famous Gayatri Mantra: “Bhur Bhuvaḥ Swaḥ”. Here, the ‘Swa’ – that is, the heavenly realm of Swa – is the upper face of the Udukk. ‘Bhu’ is the bottom part of the Udukk. ‘Bhuva’ is the space between the upper face and the bottom part (the region between heaven and earth). That is the Bhuvarkaloka, which is the realm of air. The Bhuvarkaloka situated above the earth.

In this way, the shape of the Udukk itself indicates the positions of the three worlds (Thrilokas).

Now, the upper face of this Udukk, which represents heaven, is adorned with a sun ring in this manner. At the bottom, there is a moon ring. There are two rings – one on the upper face and one on the bottom face of the Udukk. These are called the Sun Ring and the Moon Ring respectively.

These Sun Ring and Moon Ring are covered and wrapped by a very thin, delicate skin. This skin is conceived as Maya (illusion). It is this form wrapped in the Maya-skin covering the Sun Ring and Moon Ring that becomes the approximate shape of the Udukk.

On each of these rings there are six holes. These six holes may represent the Shadadharas (six energy centres). The thread that connects the Sun Ring and the lower Moon Ring – that is, the medium that connects heaven and earth – is the thread of the which denote the Vedas.

Using this (Veda) thread, it is woven in a clockwise (pradakshina) manner through these six holes, thereby connecting the rings of the Udukk to the Udukk itself. After that, in the middle portion – the Bhuvarkaloka, the realm of air between earth and heaven – Lord Paramashiva has placed his ornament, the Vasuki Naga, with its head and tail turned downward, in such a way that it presses upon this middle section.

This is what is called the “kachcha” portion of the Udukk. Now, when playing the Udukk (when pressing), the thumb and the other three fingers press this kachcha portion. Because of this pressure, and through the application of the fingers, the sound changes according to the required svara (musical note).

In the middle of the body of the Udukk, between earth and heaven, there is a hole. This is called the Nabhi Thula (navel hole). Every living being has a navel hole, right? Then, on the Moon Ring side (the earth side), it is covered with a very fine skin. In order to further enhance and enrich the sound produced by this fine skin, a very thin “eera” (palm fibre) is stretched and tied around it.

When the Udukk is played, that sound is called “alamb” (the striking sound is referred to as alamb).

Udukk is the musical instrument most beloved to Lord Ayyappa. During his pooja times, the Udukk is placed on a leaf to the right side of the Lord and is worshipped along with the Lord. Only after playing the invocatory talas beginning with Ganapati on this worshipped Udukk does the Shastham Paattu begin. It has been said that Udukk is a Deva Vadyam (divine instrument). The belief is that the thirty-three crore devas reside in every object on this earth. There are thirty-three crore devas in every object, in every living being, in every vessel, and everywhere.

Therefore, there must also be a place for these devas in the Udukk. The devas do have their positions in the Udukk. The belief is that the Trimurthis (the three gods) occupy the upper face, which is the heavenly face, the Mukha Mandalam.

If the face of the Udukk is divided into three parts – that is, if the face of the instrument is divided into three sections:
The portion near the hole (near the thread) is called “Thadavattam”,

The central (overall middle) portion is called “Panavattam”,

And the portion between the Panavattam and the Thadavattam is called “Valavattam”.

The reason is that the sounds coming from these three parts have slight variations.

The low, calm, gentle sound comes from the Thadavattam.

The sounds coming from the Panavattam are “Khana” (dense, heavy) sounds – fierce and heavy sounds.

The sounds coming from the Valavattam in between are gentle, pleasing, heart-touching sounds that delight everyone.

According to these svara positions, we can also identify the deities.

In the portion near the Thadavattam, and in the Valavattam position, resides the sattvic deity Mahavishnu.

In the Panavattam position reside Rudra and Shiva in their raudra (fierce) form.And in between these two resides Brahma with his rajasic nature.

In all the other parts of the Udukk, the remaining thirty-three crore devas also reside.

When 'Sastham Paattu', which is based on scientific tala concepts, was passed down through generations, many variations and changes occurred. If lines are composed without following the tala, or if elongations and shortenings are made in pronunciation without ensuring tala-bound adherence, the 'Sastham Paattu' gets distorted.

The ten taalas — Ndhappetuka Muthalam, Thripuda, Naalam Thalam, Kummi, Ekam, Roopakam, Chembada, Karika, Varmam, Kumbham, Chuzhari .

இவையாவும் முதல்கட்ட செயல் திட்டமேயின்றி முழுமையன்று. இதை விரைவாக 6 மாதங்களில் செயல்படுத்த முடியும்.

10th Lord Sir Francis Napier Governor of Madras granted permission and sanction for demolition of old tower in Nagapattinam at the Expense of Trichy St Joseph’s College Christian Missionaries dated 28.08.1867

The continuous effort to the Archives department to obtain a copy is futile. This was stated by Sir Walter Elliot in his travel memoirs who often visited the site/TN was the first to protest. I have attached the copy from his writings and the statue for reference.
