An update on Maj. Gen. Atif Bin Akram, DG Pakistan Rangers, Punjab, the officer allegedly responsible for mass killings by the Punjab Rangers under direct orders from Lt. Gen. Retd. Asim Munir.

In 2021/22, then Brigadier Atif Bin Akram was commanding a brigade in Balochistan.

During his command, one of his units, reportedly 9 Baloch, suffered a devastating blow when a post was overrun by terrorists. The result was heavy casualties and a serious operational failure.

But what reportedly followed was even more disgraceful.

On the morning of the attack, Atif had left for Karachi on leave.

When he learnt that one of his own posts had been overrun, he allegedly switched off his mobile phone.

Not to coordinate. Not to take charge. Not to return immediately to his command.

But apparently to protect his leave, distance himself from responsibility, and create the excuse that he was outside his area of responsibility when disaster struck.

At the time, Gen. Sarfraz was XII Corps Commander, Balochistan.

News of the disaster reached then Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, who immediately flew to the incident area.

By then, the Corps Commander had already ordered Atif to return to duty at once.

When Bajwa arrived, Gen. Sarfraz reportedly took Atif by the arm, identified him in front of the Chief, and stated that this was the brigade commander who had left his area after learning that one of his posts had been overrun.

Bajwa was furious. In front of those present, he reportedly said that he would sack the brigadier.

But instead of being removed, disciplined, or held accountable, Atif Bin Akram was promoted to Major General in July 2023 by Asim Munir and subsequently, appointed DG Pakistan Rangers, Punjab.

The same officer who allegedly abandoned responsibility in Balochistan, switched off his phone during a deadly attack, and tried to escape accountability, was elevated to higher command.

Today, he sits as DG Pakistan Rangers Punjab.

And now, under Asim Munir’s command, he is allegedly linked to the unlawful and criminal killing of innocent, unarmed Pakistanis demanding their political rights under the Constitution.

This is not just a story of one officer’s failure.

It is the story of a rotten military system that protects cowards, promotes the compromised, rewards obedience over honour, and turns failed commanders into instruments of repression against their own people.

A uniform does not erase cowardice. A rank does not wash away blood. And promotion does not absolve a man from accountability.
