What are some of the biggest challenges facing tech leaders and telcos 🤔

It’s a good question. It depends.

The first one is the #technology itself. A year ago, #ChatGPT emerged and blew everyone’s minds. A year later, we’re looking at ways to incorporate and integrate generative #AI into our workplace. It’s become second nature for some people to ask #ChatGPTfor help with anything and everything from drafting speeches to writing code.

But with every game changer, there’s the flipside. #Regulation, #dataprivacy, #security. And the big one – replacement by #AI. Fear and opportunity sit side by side.

There will be another #disruptivetechnology. And another, and another. That much you can rely on, and with each change, the challenge will be keeping up. My advice would be to read, read, and read some more. Find out, so that when the next wave hits, you know how to float.

The next challenge is keeping up with customers. We’re big on #customerexperience, our philosophy is to keep the customer at the heart of everything we do. This means always keeping ahead of their pain points, developing the best in products and services, and then listening to what’s working to make our customer experience even better.

The final challenge is #adaptability. Old ways of working have gone – the tech revolution saw to that. We work in diverse teams, we work across geographies, we need to have skillsets that are both technical and softskill strong. #Digitalis a mindset. Working smarter, not harder. #Agilityis used often, but it’s the reality. You’re either adapting or you’re dying.

This industry is dynamic, it moves quickly, and nimbleness is the only solution.

It’s a cliché, but challenges are opportunities. They open up the space for innovation, for fresh thinking, for radically different, better, ways of doing things.

I am always astounded at how human ingenuity can think up ways to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Take climate change.

We know it’s real. We know it’s happening.

We have to reduce our carbon footprint, and as a leading telco, we have an opportunity to pioneer the space.

@OoredooKuwait is tackling the challenge head on with their trial of solar hybrid-powered signal boosters. They’ve chosen trial locations across a diverse range of environments, from rural roads to islands, to test these boosters’ viability.

The switch to solar is potentially game-changing, significantly reducing carbon emissions and operational costs.

This trial charts a course for a greener and more cost-effective telecom industry. Imagine if we could run our infrastructure, our networks, on alternative, sustainable, energy sources?

But there are other ways of reducing emissions.

Ooredoo Group's recent joint venture announcement to create MENA’s largest tower company supports the reduction of the region’s carbon footprint through infrastructure optimisation, building a more #sustainable ecosystem.

Successful solutions don’t always have to be about building, they can be about reducing or removing to achieve a desired outcome.

We know it will also take #innovative solutions.

We’re proud to be an active participant in the GCC ESG Telecommunications Alliance, a pivotal collaboration among seven leading telcos in the Gulf region, dedicated to advancing sustainability, with a special focus on climate action.

It’s a space to share knowledge, ideas, and find workable solutions that address the harsh realities of climate change.

At #Ooredoo, we’re always looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible. So far, we’ve only scratched the surface, but I have no doubt there will be more good news in the near future as we progress on our sustainability journey.

I’m knocked out!

The Qatar Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (#MCIT)’s pavilion has entered the Guinness World Records for the longest independent concrete structure built using 3D printing #technology.

75 individually #3D printed pieces make up the ten levels of the 12.4-metre-tall tower, built on an area of 170 square metres.

From a printer!

A month ago, two Qatari students won a Qatar Development Bank (QDB) competition to develop their idea for 3D printed vegetables.

The custom-made 3D printer combined plant cell culture, artificially grown vegetable cells, and UV-sensitive 3D printer ink.

The cells are then moulded and printed in the shape of a carrot. Yes, we can print food that is nutritious that can support mass production.

The implications for food security are astounding, especially for countries like Qatar where there is less than 3% arable land.

These developments are mind-blowing.

The MCIT pavilion is part of Doha Expo 2023 which runs until March next year with the theme, Green Desert, Better Environment.

The pavilion showcased Qatar’s commitment to technology-based solutions, as set out in the Qatar National Vision 2030, which includes sustainable innovation like 3D printing.

Qatar is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and taking the lead in the fourth industrial revolution.

Fans throw their hands up in despair – what? You can’t be serious? 😰

If we think we’re frustrated watching from the stands, imagine how the players must feel!

That’s exactly why #Qatari inventor—and pro footballer—Mohamed Al-Qasabi created OPAS, a smart system that detects offside violations accurately in football matches.

The system requires the installation of a chip in the football and in the players’ kit to track their movements, sending a direct alert to the referee’s watch when someone is offside.

It’s the first system of its kind enabling the referee to take appropriate decisions in fractions of a second and with accuracy. No more shouting at the ref from the comfort of your armchair 😬

But there’s more. The system's capability to collect data about players' movements during a game offers valuable insights, identifying performance trends, improving training regimes and boosting individual improvement.

There’s also the potential to develop team strategy.

Al-Qassabi recently won four awards at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) 2023, a gold medal, the Korea Institute of Patent Information best invention award, the Singapore innovation award, and the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office shield for OPAS 🏆🏆🏆🏆

They say innovation is where necessity meets passion, and this proudly Qatari young changemaker is proof of this.

One thing’s for sure – it can only upgrade the beautiful game.

Chris Peirce is an extraordinary professional who has the ability to bring together multiple stakeholders to drive policy and regulatory reform, particularly in the telecoms industry. Lusail recently hosted the Qatar F1 Grand Prix—a record-breaking moment for Ooredoo Qatar who shot the lights out with a staggering 30+ TB of mobile data traffic recorded, 50% of which was over our #5G network.

Formula 1, ’the fastest R&D lab on Earth’, is at the forefront of #technology. #F1 vehicles sport hundreds of high-tech sensors which collect real-time data on the track, with F1 and vehicle engineers leveraging technology’s benefits to create virtual testing grounds.

These super-connected cars often test-drive communication systems that we use in our less souped up everyday cars! Vehicles are changing from simple motorised engines into a complex, almost sentient form of transport, responding to the environment, both within and without, with F1 racing cars taking pole position.

Ooredoo’s already been exploring the potential options that #5G networks and #technology can bring to the motor industry, if not F1!

These are some of the developments I’m most excited about:

Ooredoo Qatar showcased the world’s first self-driving #5G connected aerial taxi, a large, drone-like vehicle big enough to transport two people to a destination up to 20 minutes away with a speed of 130 km/h. Flying cars are no longer a futuristic film concept!

We've partnered with the Qatar Government to enable real-time insights on Lusail Light Rail’s performance, and support smart transport #innovations both in-station and via apps, all powered by #5G.

We partnered with #Ericsson to demonstrate remote patient assessment and ultrasound procedure inside a #5G connected ambulance using a special haptic glove controlled by a doctor remotely using a specially designed joystick. The ambulances of the future, already in prototype.

We also unrolled the first #5G enabled port in #Qatar - the first in the Middle East.

But as any dedicated #F1 will tell you, it’s also about the track. Multiple sensors track information from road surface quality to road curvature, increasing road safety. No more bent rims bouncing into a pothole. Those same safety measures will also extend to monitoring in transit weather conditions helping vehicles respond pre-emptively to stormy weather (not much of an issue here in Doha!).

These smart roads will form part of Lusail City, the $45bn smart city being developed in partnership with #Ooredoo, connected across a #5G fixed and wireless backbone.

Sensors and other devices will be connected to the #IoT to enhance safety, efficiency and pain-free commuting.

#5G is accelerating the motor industry in 0-60 seconds!

Fintech is a welcome disruptor 💥

It has the power to transform the unbanked and has already changed how we view financial services and products.

So, when did you last visit your bank branch?

Fintech affects individuals where it matters most – their wallet.

✔It’s receiving your salary on time, avoiding bounced debit orders and overdraft fees.

✔It’s being able to send money home to a foreign country, safely, cheaply, and quick.

✔It’s being able to invest in fractions stocks from a country halfway round the world, a virtual impossibility a mere decade ago.

✔It’s about making payments with your phone, your watch, your laptop.

#Fintech is also highly competitive for both more sophisticated digital markets and those still nascent and the opportunity is ripe for #innovation.

Here’s what I’m excited about:

Embedded #finance, banking-as-a-service, and Buy Now Pay Later models, opportunities for #digitalfirst banks and developments in blockchain.

#Ooredoo already has a strong position in #Fintech in #Qatar — a 35% market share of the overall mobile money transaction value in the MENA region.

We’re now working to provide state-of the art, mobile-first financial services in our other #Ooredoo markets. 

The possibility is endless and we’re banking on it 👌

We also had the opportunity to share our next steps, acknowledge the Team’s excellence with various awards, and take part in the open discussions with members of the wider Ooredoo #Maldives Team to hear their challenges, their ideas to move forward, and their opportunities for advancement.
