A new Wharton–Boston University paper, "The AI Layoff Trap", models a terrifying loop:

Companies automate → workers lose income → consumers stop spending → demand collapses → companies automate even more.

Every CEO has an incentive to move first. Nobody wants to step on the brakes while competitors hit the gas.

The result?

✅ Boundless productivity.
✅ Zero demand

UBI, retraining, worker equity, and more competition may not fix the incentive problem. The paper argues that a targeted automation tax may be needed to make companies pay for the purchasing power they destroy.

The question isn’t just:

“Will AI replace workers?”

It’s: Who replaces the customers?
