SPARK Terminal: An Implementation Study Using OpenSouls Framework

I built SPARK Terminal, a conversational AI interface using the OpenSouls framework. Here's how we created an AGI dog character with a custom frontend and voice synthesis.

Part 1: Understanding the Framework

I started by exploring the OpenSouls codebase and testing existing sample souls on day one when @kevinafischer published the public repository. This hands-on approach was essential for understanding how souls define personality through static memories, cognitive steps, and subprocesses.

Part 2: Creating the Soul

I created a custom soul named SPARK inspired by @IllusionOfLife 's AGI dog Spark, with a defined personality, speaking style, and backstory through research. Personality complexity emerged from thoughtful prompt engineering rather than code volume.

Part 3: Frontend Implementation

Then I built the terminal-style chat interface in Next.js with responsive design and real-time connection state management. The UI communicates with the Soul Engine backend via WebSocket, dispatching perceptions and receiving interaction requests.

Part 4: Deployment Challenges

The deployment to Render was so painstaking. The framework's complex dependency graph required careful configuration of Prisma client generation, environment variables, and build processes. These hurdles highlighted the framework's sophisticated architecture.

Part 5: Voice Integration

Then once all was working I was not satisifed with Spark just being a text based chat bot so I looked into Integrating ElevenLabs text-to-speech for a synchronized experience where SPARK's has a voice. This required managing audio generation state, typing animations, and graceful fallbacks. In addition once the terminal was being used by the public we hit our account limit on eleven labs, but we have upgraded it since then.
