The @Burg_fastpitch Lady Pirates may have been #2 in the state rankings, but played like #1 on the biggest stage knocking off the top ranked Liberty Union Lady Lions 10-0 in 6 innings of the inaugural Division 5 State Championship game.

#2 Wheelersburg (28-0) couldn't have gotten off to a better start as Ava Estep led the game off with a triple to start a 5-run opening frame that featured three extra base hits, 2 walks, and 10 batters coming to the plate.

#1 Liberty Union (29-1) tried to answer right back in the bottom of the first when Payton Hochradel reached on an infield hit and moved to second on an error, but she would be stranded there as Lady Pirates starter Kaylynn Carter struck out the next three batters to end the inning. It would be the start of a nine strikeout performance for the Senior in her final game in black and orange.

After a blank second inning the Lady Pirates would add on again with a run in the third when Jalynn Drake led off with a double and scored one batter later on a Makenzie Mullens RBI single.

They then added three more on the board in the fifth when Estep sent a shot well over the center field fence and was followed by a Carter RBI single to make it 9-0. It moved to run-rule territory in the sixth when Drake singled and later scored on a Lauren Truitt RBI single.

Carter then retired Liberty Union in order in the bottom of the sixth to complete the perfect season. She only allowed one more hit after the first, a Suzie Shultz one out single in the fourth and issued one walk.

It's the third state title for Wheelersburg in the past four years for the winningest Senior class in school history. Liberty Union finishes as state runner-up after winning the Division 3 state title a year ago.
