God bless Coach Holtz and his beautiful family. He was truly one of one.
Several weeks after my son Jake was killed in 2020, I was in a fog I can barely describe. I was out walking, trying to make sense of a world that no longer made sense, when my phone rang. I didn’t recognize the number. I almost ignored it. Something told me to answer.
On the other end was Coach Holtz.
We had never met. We had never spoken. Yet he somehow learned about our tragedy and called simply to offer his condolences and sit with a grieving father. We talked about faith. About family. About @GamecockFB and @NDFootball, where my grandfather once played on the 1930 freshman team. Mostly, he listened.
At a time when it felt like my beating heart had been ripped from my chest, that simple, unexpected act of kindness meant more than I can ever explain.
We texted several times after that. He was always encouraging. Always uplifting. His spirit was contagious and his belief in people unwavering.
That’s who he was. Not just a legendary coach, but a deeply decent man who reached out when he didn’t have to.
Wishing Coach peace and love as he walks on in his journey.
Rest easy, Coach.

Great article...sums up the state of Gamecock athletics perfectly! "The heartbeat of Williams-Brice Stadium is generational, not conditional. But at some point, you have to stop being grateful that the stands are full and start wondering why the trophy case isn't."
From a business standpoint, loyalty is an asset.
But in college football, it can become a liability.
South Carolina has one of the most committed fanbases in college football. But when demand never dips, pressure can fade. Incentives shrink. And inconsistency starts to feel… acceptable.
Is unwavering fan loyalty quietly enabling the mediocrity everyone’s frustrated with?
I took a hard look at the Gamecocks’ attendance paradox.
