Built around a hypnotic groove inspired by funk, dance music and rock, "Fools Gold" transformed The Stone Roses from rising indie favourites into one of the most influential British bands of their generation. Their appearance on Dutch television's Countdown in 1989 came as the Madchester movement was gaining momentum, with the song becoming a defining soundtrack of the era.
"Albion" became one of Babyshambles' most cherished songs, capturing Pete Doherty's gift for poetic lyricism and fragile, deeply personal songwriting. Long treasured by fans before its official studio release, the track grew into a defining moment of the band's catalogue. This performance from the 2006 NME Awards highlights the raw emotion and unpredictability that made Babyshambles such a compelling live act.
Originally released as the B side to The Jam's 1979 single "Strange Town", "The Butterfly Collector" became one of Paul Weller's most respected songs. During Noel Gallagher's Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall in 2007, Noel welcomed Weller to the stage for a memorable performance of the track.
By the time "Can't Stand Me Now" was released, the relationship between Pete Doherty and Carl Barรขt had become one of the most talked about stories in British music. Performing the song on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, The Libertines delivered a track whose lyrics reflected the tensions and bond that sat at the heart of the band.
By 1996, "Love Spreads" had become a centrepiece of The Stone Roses' live shows, with John Squire's blues influenced guitar work pushing the song far beyond its studio version. Released on Second Coming, it arrived after a lengthy gap between albums and showcased a heavier side of the band.

The Stone Roses โ She Bangs the Drums Blackpool Empress Ballroom, โ89 โ
that night the Roses turned a seaside ballroom into the centre of the universe.
Same swagger. Same electricity. Same โnothing can touch usโ energy.
This is Manchesterโs heartbeat, still pounding.
Love spreads her arms
Waits there for the nails
I forgive you boy
I will prevail
1996 Roses were heavy, hypnotic, and absolutely unbothered. A band still capable of shaking the walls and reminding everyone why they changed the game in the first place.
๐ Madchester forever.
21. Happy Mondays
A glorious mix of house music, surrealism, housing estate funk and drugs. Lots of drugs. One of the UKโs most deranged and boisterous bands. Scallies, yes, but a terrific band first.
Favourite album: Squirrel and G-Man (1987)

Few dance tracks hit early 90s radio with the same force as โThe Power,โ as Snap! brought the song to Top of the Pops in 1990 during the rise of European dance music into the mainstream. Built around a huge sampled hook and Turbo Bโs commanding rap vocal, the track quickly became one of the defining club anthems of the era.
