ohai 👋
it’s just my first blog as Chair of Scottish Medical Students Committee.
Here we lay out our priorities:
✍️ Student Finance
✍️ Travel
✍️ UKFPO
✍️ Medical Student Intake
✍️ ‘We live in a time where being a medical student is exciting…but the uncertainty that awaits us as future doctors is also scary’
New chair Aaron Fernandez outlines the work being carried out by the BMA Scottish medical students committee 👇

The UK has a slightly unusual medical workforce plan, consisting of training large volumes of medical graduates and exporting them for free to other English speaking countries, whilst actively recruiting doctors from developing nations.
There must be a more efficient method 🤔
We have made it clear that the NHS temporary escalation spaces (TES) guide is "normalisation of what is an unacceptable and dangerous situation".

"policy makers must give education equal priority to service provision and research...increased investment in medical education capacity and expertise is required, ideally ahead of major expansion."

“One of the big things we’d like to see is an absolute freedom of choice for doctors as to whether they participate or not.”
The BMA has a neutral stance towards the #AssistedDyingBill but @DrAndrewGreen highlights some of our asks as he appears on @SkyNews this evening.
“We want to stop the drop, and prevent the huge decrease in funding suffered by undergraduate and graduate students."
@H_Budden explains why we’re campaigning to #FixOurFunding and why we need medical students to answer our survey today. https://t.co/IMn3K48fRi
❗ NEW: BMA Scotland chair @DrIainKennedy has written to Cab Sec @neilcgray seeking urgent clarification on the Scottish position after a review of AAs and PAs was announced in England
🧵1/2
“Patients are believing that they’re seeing a doctor when they’re not, and that’s leading to some unsafe decisions”
@DrPhilBanfield spoke to @BBCBreakfast welcoming the Government review into the use of PAs & AAs, but reiterated BMA concerns about the risks to patient safety.
We're asking @wesstreeting for a commitment to protect GP practices from the unfair and potentially devastating financial burden of increased employer NI Contributions.

Today, guidance has been released for SFP (Specialised Foundation Programme) recruitment: https://t.co/Ymh5ckam4l
We'll continue to lobby UKFPO, NHS England and the Medical Schools Council for fair merit-based recruitment across all four nations @BMA_NI@BMACymru@BMAScotland
Solidarity with striking doctors in 🏴. The longest strike in NHS history caused by the worst pay cut in the public sector
We negotiated an acceptable 1st step in 🏴. Its clearly not doctors who are the problem
The malicious UK goverment needs to stop posturing & get credible
Can someone at @NHSHighland please explain why PAs are now supervising doctors at Raigmore Hospital? Is this a joke? Job advert posted 14/12/23.
