Sad is the day when I am able to say 'Oh, we have a supt who worked through an elementary massacre; let's connect them.' before I can say that we, as a nation, can ensure the very basic need of physical safety for students.
Dan and I started within one year of each other; I have truly grown up at AASA, have been privileged and honored to work for him, have had countless opportunities during my career, and will be forever grateful for his leadership, mentorship, and commitment to public education.
Picked my son up from train station on his return from college. Always such joy.
But this ride home was different.
Him: I really wish I hadn't been born in this era. The racism, the war, the pandemic. It's all too much. I just want to live a happy life.
Nailed it. Sadly.

Thankful for the leadership coming from these districts and their commitment to following the CDC and science.
Disgusted my governor is wasting LEA time and resources on this (instead of, you know, student instruction).

My favorite advocacy meetings are the ones where I sit in with supts. In a recent call about data collection (Hint: @usedgov is proposing a LOT of new collection), one supt shared this quick, but powerful, quip:
There's need to know, and nice to know. What do we NEED to know?
