I've sat across from founders with real orders, real customers and real revenue, and watched them get told no by a bank that said yes to a company ten times their size the same week.

That's what I thought about when the IMF raised its 2026 world forecast to 3.1% today. Developing economies slow to 3.7%, down from 4.5%, and that's where most small businesses are still waiting on that yes.

In Nigeria, 23.1% of small firms had a loan application rejected, according to the World Bank's Enterprise Survey. For large firms it was 0.2%.

Same economy. Same banks. Different answer.

The fix: report small-business loans approved, country by country, next to every growth forecast.

This is the case I make in my advisory work on the UN's SDG 8 and 9. SDG 8.3 asks for access to finance for small businesses, and that's the number I'd watch.
