It took us 6 years to get to our first 60k customers, each of whom had to sign and courier 40+ pages of forms and wait for days. We got to 1 crore customers in the next 6, entirely eliminating paper in the process. This was enabled by eKYC, digital signatures (eSign), & digital documents (Digilocker).
The productivity increase, savings, and wastage reduction for companies and customers have been exponential. Hundreds of millions of pages that didn’t have to be printed and transported and valuable customer time that didn’t have to be wasted. Most of our time in the first six years was spent figuring out how to send forms back and forth collecting docs.
We had ~900 on the team in late 2017 with ~5lk customers. Today, we have 1.3 crore customers with ~1100 on the team. And this while our customer support quality has improved significantly. We have done many other things right, but doing away with the physical process has helped exponentially.
This has also reduced customer onboarding risk significantly. Physical forms, docs, and signatures with multiple intermediaries vs. the customer directly with their digital identity and signature + mandatory online In person verification (IPV).
The first thing I said on this panel was that I wouldn’t have been on the stage if not for the robust Indian digital infrastructure that @zerodha has benefited from. Thanks to the people who enabled it in the Govt & its machinery, @NandanNilekani, @pramodkvarma & everyone else.

Humans are known to be self deprecating individuals. The success of Generative AI depends on us. Tough ask but for once think saving the entire race, and not just your greed.

Categorize teams into stars, dots, and dashes. Stars are high-performance thinkers, dots are transactional doers, and dashes are mediocre draggers.
Get rid of the dashes. Convert them into stars/dots or fire them.

What is unfolding at BYJU's is really sad:
- Firing employees.
- Suing their own lenders.
- Auditors/board members resigning.
Not even releasing their FY 2022 data.
But were FIFA world cup sponsors, hired Messi (just months ago).
They put Indian startups on the world scene by burning money on marketing. But, couldn't solve customer retention and product problem.
If a corporate mismanagement blow up happens, it would cause a lot of stress on the entire Indian startup community.
I really hope that things come out clean. Else, it will hurt a lot of good, hardworking and genuine people.
