カンヌでの対談でトラボルタは、なぜいま自らこの極めて個人的な物語を演出したのかを語り、家族をキャストに招いた経緯、そして1962年の希望的なトーンを志向したと明かした。企画の狙いから見ると、単なる郷愁ではなく、当時に漂っていた明るさや礼節をフィルムの肌ざわりとして立ち上げる意図が核にある。

演出面では、空港や客室の所作、機体そのものへの愛情がフレームの隅々にまで行き届く。クラーク・ショットウェル、ケリー・エビストン＝クィネット、エラ・ブルー・トラボルタらが、出会いと別れの軽やかなリズムを受け持ち、旅の高揚と余韻を編んでいく。スター性で押し切るのでなく、視線や間合いのやさしさで物語を支える布陣だ。

一方で批評は割れる。1時間という尺に寄り添うようにナレーションに頼る場面が多く、ドラマの起伏や賭け金が薄いという指摘はある。視覚的な愛情は豊かだが、物語の推進力は抑えめ——その控えめさを美点とみるか、物足りなさと捉えるかで評価が分かれている。
