Peter Thiel on the type of company more startup founders should build
Thiel first emphasizes his belief that when starting a company, you should always ask:
“Can this company become a monopoly?”
He then lists three of the most common types of monopolies:
Super fast distribution on a very thin product (e.g. Twitter)
A technological advantage that is continually built upon with iterative improvement and compounds over time (e.g. SaaS software)
A truly brilliant breakthrough (e.g. Bitcoin)
But he argues that there’s a different monopoly category that’s continually overlooked:
“A different modality for innovation that we do very little of and we don’t even recognize as an important category is what I would describe as ‘Complex Coordination,’ where you take a lot of different pieces and the challenge is to coordinate them into something new.”
Thiel continues:
“This is the thing that’s maybe 180 degrees antithetical to the Lean Startup ethos. It’s complicated. You have to put all the pieces together in just the right way. I think this is on some level what really drove Apple as an innovative company in the last decade… What was new about the iPhone? There was no single component that was new. It was just that you put all of these things together in just the right way… and once you built it, it was actually super hard for people to replicate. You had an advantage for many years.”
He points to Tesla and SpaceX as more recent examples.
“There’s no component to the Tesla that’s actually that new. It’s just that you put all of the pieces together. You re-engineered the whole distributor network. It was this complex coordination that made it work. There’s like this lost art of accounting where you figure out how much things cost and add them all together. And Elon has discovered this lost art of accounting which no other people practice.”

Jeff Bezos had a better idea for the Forbes 400 list:
“Somebody needs to make a list where they rank people by how much wealth they’ve created for other people, instead of the Forbes list that ranks you by your own wealth.”
When Bezos said this Amazon was worth around $2.3 trillion and Bezos’s stake was around $200 billion.
“Then I’ve created something like $2.1 trillion in wealth for other people. That’s a better list.”
Whole Foods founder @iamjohnmackey and I talked about this a few months ago.
John made some great points:
"All philanthropy ultimately comes from business. That's where the profits are.
And where does all the taxes come from?
It ultimately comes from business as well.
This is the engine that's lifting humanity out. And the entrepreneurs are the drivers of that engine.
Somebody like @elonmusk , he gets a very, very, very tiny sliver of the value that he creates for the whole world.
He and people like Rockefeller, they're lambasted as the villains, when they are the greatest heroes that have ever lived in terms of creating value and helping people.
The average person doesn't see it.
They're still stuck and they think it's a zero-sum game, that because somebody's rich, somebody else is poor.
That is not true."

"Capitalism created the possibility of the win win win. It used to be a zero sum game where somebody won, somebody else lost.
The biggest mistake people make, intellectuals in particular, they still think we're in a zero sum world. They're obsessed with some billionaires because Bernie Sanders thinks that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk somehow stole the money from the people.
They don't understand that it's this prosperity machine that's creating more, not just for those billionaires, but for everything that they're touching. They're creating value for their customers, they're creating value for their employees. Their suppliers are flourishing, their investors are seeing their capital go up. It can be reinvested and compound.
All philanthropy ultimately comes from business. That's where the profits are.
Where does all the taxes come from? It ultimately comes from business as well.
This is the engine that's lifting humanity out. The entrepreneurs are the drivers of that engine. Somebody like Elon Musk, he gets a very, very, very tiny sliver of the value that he creates for the whole world."

Larry Pages’s pitch to acquire DeepMind:
"Demis's goal was to create AGI, so why bother with the idea of an independent DeepMind?
Google was the obvious place to realize his ambition.
“Why don't you take advantage of what I've already created,” Larry Page asked Demis.
It was a recruitment pitch that he had used successfully on other startup founders.
“He was basically telling me, maybe you could build a company like Google, but it would take the best part of your career, Demis recalled.
If my real mission was to build AGI, then why don't I use all the resources that he's accumulated? I thought that was a pretty good argument.
Would I be happier looking back on building a multi-dollar business or helping solve intelligence?
It was an easy choice.
When we went on that walk together, I felt he would have taken his own offer.
The contrast with DeepMind's venture capital backers was obvious.
Demis had struggled to persuade Founders Fund that DeepMind would end up changing every widget in the world.
With Page, he didn't even have to make the argument.
I was fed up with scrambling around trying to justify what I knew was the biggest thing of all time, Demis recalled.
I just thought, look, I'll go to Google, I'll get a shitload of computers, and then I'll solve intelligence."
Warren Buffett’s career advice:
“I was up at Harvard a while back, and a very nice young guy, he picked me up at the airport, a Harvard Business School attendee.”
And he said, “Look. I went to undergrad here, and then I worked for X and Y and Z, and now I’ve come here.” And he said, “I thought it would really round out my résumé perfectly if I went to work now for a big management consulting firm.”
And I said, “Well, is that what you want to do?” And he said, “No,” but he said, “That’s the perfect résumé.”
And I said, “Well when are you going to start doing what you like?” And he said, “Well I’ll get to that someday.”
And I said, “Well you know, your plan sounds to me a lot like saving up sex for your old age. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.” 🤣
