Received a PM (private message-lah) from a journalist friend of mine.

He cautioned me that the entire Tabung Haji rescue plan wasn't about deposits and investment solely by the Malays and Muslims, but the various rescue fund sources were derived from the national coffers.

"National coffers" means... cashflow, reserves and even borrowings parked at the Treasury, and collected via taxes and levies mandated on all and sundries... who qualify to pay tax.

Thinking deeper, non-Muslims being taxed in the country may feel short-changed as Treasury's excess funds had been diverted to rescue Tabung Haji.

This question became pertinent as MP Hassan Abdul Karim (PKR-Pasir Gudang) has asked in the Parliament yesterday as to how the government plans to honour RM27.5 billion sukuk to rescue Tabung Haji further?

So who and where are the "sakau" culprits, actually?

At the Parliament yesterday (Aug 11), two Senator- Ministers were slated to do the job for public debrief.

1) Finance Minister II (Senator) Amir Hamzah Azizan said 7 Tabung Haji investments had suffered total losses.

These seven are among the 14 problematic investments identified by the RCI into Tabung Haji that suffered total losses, with the institution and government forced to absorb billions of ringgit in losses, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Amir Hamzah Azizan confirmed that the 14 investments identified by the RCI had resulted in estimated losses of nearly RM13 billion.

Of this, RM10.2 billion represented the government's 2018 bailout through Urusharta Jamaah Sdn Bhd (UJSB), while a further RM2.6 billion in impairments or net losses was borne by Tabung Haji between 2018 and 2025 for problematic investments that remained under its management.

"Seven out of the 14 investments suffered 100% losses. Not part of them, but total losses," he said when winding up the special debate on the RCI report on Tabung Haji.

2) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), told the Parliament that Tabung Haji had lodged 12 reports over RCI findings.

These 12 reports comprised six lodged with the police and six with the MACC, the Parliament was told.

Time of reports lodged were not made known.

Thus far, we only saw some nameless "Gurkhas" being dragged into statement-taking, but the higher-ups are still scot-free.

3) Former Tabung Haji chairman, CEO removed in 2021 without reasons.

The two were former chief executive officer Nik Mohd Hasyudeen Yusoff and former chairman Tan Sri Md Nor Md Yusof.

This was revealed by Senator-Minister Dr Zulkifli Hasan during winding up.

The decision to terminate the appointments of the two senior Tabung Haji management figures in 2021 was made by the then Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri (see picture below), without reasons being given for their removal.

"However, no reason was given by the minister," the Senator-Minister said.

The report was finalised in July 2022 (dated July 19, 2022) and presented to the King in August 2022 (Aug 30, 2022).

The RCI Report was withheld until July 2026... but Ismail Sabri had ceased to be the PM since November 2022.
