Instead of focusing only on how people are “supposed” to mourn, we should make space for people to honour their loved ones in ways that feel meaningful and personal.
To be honest, I believe that when we are mourning someone, we should celebrate them in a way that reflects who they were when they were alive. Sometimes culture tells us to wear black, behave a certain way, or follow specific traditions. But what if the person loved white?
I feel that mourning should not be limited to cultural expectations. It should also be about remembering the person for who they truly were. Doing the things they loved can help us feel connected to them, celebrate their life, and find comfort in the grieving process.
Reflecting on the 2017 death of 18-year-old Adwoa Agyarkwa Anyimadu-Antwi, daughter of the Member of Parliament for Akim Central, Archbishop Prof. Prince Daniels of the True Christian Bible Church-Ghana has called on parents to be more emotionally present in the lives of their children.
According to him, emotional challenges can significantly affect young people, making it crucial for parents to pay close attention to their children’s feelings and concerns rather than dismissing them.
He stressed that providing emotional support and maintaining open communication can help young people navigate difficult situations.
