As Ethiopia takes on the chairship of the AU Peace and Security Council for the month of April 2026, I am honored to warmly welcome both the newly elected and re-elected members of the Council.
This flag hoisting ceremony symbolizes our shared commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability across Africa. Congratulations to Benin, Gabon, Lesotho, Morocco, Somalia, and South Africa on beginning their terms as new members. We also commend Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, and Uganda on their re-election for another two-year mandate.
In its role as Chair, Ethiopia reaffirms its dedication to cooperation, constructive dialogue, and the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”
Together, let us continue to strengthen the Council’s efforts toward a peaceful, prosperous, and united continent.
It is with deep sorrow that I heard the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sine-Giorgios, a trailblazer, mentor, and enduring inspiration to generations. For over six decades, she devoted herself to serving Ethiopia and the African continent with remarkable dedication.
Ambassador Konjit broke barriers and created opportunities for women in diplomacy, embodying courage, dignity, and steadfast commitment. Her vision, leadership, and mentorship have left a profound legacy that will continue to guide and inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
My thoughts are with her family and colleagues. Her remarkable life remains a powerful testament to service, leadership, and the strength to overcome boundaries.
Rest In Peace, Ambassador.
Your legacy will forever endure.
My heart is heavy with the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis, my former colleague and dear friend.
Farewell to a titan of diplomacy. Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis entered the foreign service in 1962, one year before the founding of the Organisation of African Unity. From her earliest days as a diplomat, she devoted herself to the cause of decolonization. She later served as Ethiopia's Permanent Representative to the African Union, where she continued to shape the continent's destiny with wisdom, grace, and unwavering commitment.
Throughout her remarkable career, she broke barriers and opened doors for so many who followed. She was a true pioneer, not only in her achievements but in the quiet dignity and strength with which she carried herself. Her legacy of service is unmatched, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Rest in peace, dear Konjit. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
