Ancient Peruvian surgeons were beating US Army doctors by a distance.

They cut holes into living skulls, and roughly 8 in every 10 patients walked away, a success rate that shames battlefield medicine 300 years newer.

Trepanation means drilling or scraping through the bone of a living skull, usually to relieve pressure after a head wound.

In 2018 a team led by University of Miami neurologist David Kushner measured how often it actually worked.

Across the sample, Inca-era survival ran 75 to 83 percent, while American Civil War surgeons doing the same operation lost 46 to 56 percent of their patients, so the ancient odds were about double the modern ones.

The Inca kept no written medicine, no manual and no anatomy text, yet their outcomes crushed surgeons with formal training, printed textbooks and steel instruments.

🚨🇺🇸 The government is now gatekeeping which customers get access to America's most powerful new AI model, one by one...

Per The Information, the Trump administration asked OpenAI to stagger the release of GPT-5.6 over security concerns.

CEO Sam Altman told staff the model will roll out in a limited preview, with the government "approving access customer by customer" during the preview period.

The request came out of talks with two agencies, the Office of the National Cyber Director and the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

This is the pattern now hardening into policy.

Days ago Washington blocked all foreign access to Anthropic's most advanced models and forced the company to cut off customers entirely.

Now OpenAI's frontier release is being throttled the same way.

Notably, Anthropic wasn't even invited to the recent feedback session that included OpenAI, Meta, and Reflection AI, days before the export controls dropped.

The government is treating cutting-edge AI like weapons technology, deciding case by case who's allowed to use it.
