My landlord's wife knocked on my door three weeks ago to warn me about a man in this compound.

She said, "That man is dangerous. Please be very careful around him."

I thanked her and locked my door.

For two weeks, I avoided him completely.

I stopped greeting him. Changed my walk route to avoid his apartment. Even changed the time I left for work.

Then last week. His daughter knocked on my door. She was maybe seven years old.

She held a small cooler and said, "Daddy said thank you for helping him with the NEPA bill last month," she smiled. "He made pepper soup."

I stood there staring at this child and her little cooler. Her father had cooked for me. To say thank you 🤔

I collected the cooler and sat down.

The same man I'd been warned to avoid had remembered that I'd quietly covered his share of the electricity bill when he was short of cash.

He didn't knock to explain himself. He just cooked.

Later I found out the real story.

Him and the landlord's wife had a boundary dispute over a fence two years ago. It became personal.

She had been warning every new tenant about him since. And I, without asking any questions, had believed her completely.

I almost missed knowing a genuinely decent man because I trusted someone else's unresolved grudge.

It made me wonder how many good people we've quietly written off because we trusted a story we never bothered to verify 🤷

Today, I almost handed out ₦70,000 for just ₦700.

For a few seconds, I didn’t realize what had happened.

A man walked up to my POS stand and requested a withdrawal of ₦70,000.

I collected his ATM card, inserted it into the POS, entered ₦70,000, and handed the terminal to him to enter his PIN.

A few moments later, the transaction was successful.

I reached for the cash…

Then something made me look at the POS screen one more time.

My heart skipped.

The amount on the screen was no longer ₦70,000.

It was ₦700.

Somehow, while entering his PIN, he had edited the transaction amount and removed two zeros.

When I asked him what happened, he calmly said, “Maybe it was a mistake.”

I looked him straight in the eye and told him I was ready to call the police.

His expression immediately changed.

He instantly confessed that he had changed the amount himself and pleaded I shouldn’t involve the police.

Today, I learned a lesson that every POS operator should remember:

Never hand over cash until you’ve confirmed the exact amount on the successful transaction screen.

One quick glance saved me from losing ₦69,300.

To everyone running a business, this is your reminder:

Stay alert. Be calm. Verify everything.
