Being an effective CEO requires many important factors. Two critical components include: (a) connecting vs. controlling - rather than telling your direct reports what to do, encouraging team members to communicate to drive cross-functional collaboration is a great way to raise performance. This enables team members to work together to solve enterprise challenges facing the organization; and (b) having a broad knowledge base and understanding of key issues impacting each of the business unit and functions that report into you. This enables you to serve as a good sounding board to your direct reports and provide them with guidance and input as they lead their people and teams.
I discuss these factors and other aspects of effective senior executive leadership with John Arcario in next week's episode of the Tales from the C-Suite podcast. In the next episode of the Tales from the C-Suite podcast, I had the opportunity to speak with John Arcario, the Chief Executive Officer of Partners International. We discussed the importance of being intentional about a number of key factors when stepping into a c-suite role for the first time. Any new member of an executive leadership team needs to focus on building strong cross-functional relationships with their peers. One's ability to get along and work collaboratively with others builds a strong brand and reputation as an enterprise leader.
They also need to have strong versatility in the talents and skills they bring to the organization. Always raising one's hand and volunteering to take on new assignments, initiatives, and responsibilities goes a long way. This helps position you for taking on increased scale and scope for the organization as time progresses. It also demonstrates one's willingness to take on new challenges, try things that are innovative, and lead with a growth mindset.

Ego and arrogance can derail any c-suite leader quickly. Great senior executives know how balance humility with confidence. Managing one's ego takes intellectual curiosity, a continuous desire to learn, and a passion for working together with others. Some of this comes naturally, but most of it is learned through experience. Navigating relationships with difficult types of people can be quite challenging. You have to know when to be flexible, when to stand your ground, and when to push back in a direct and assertive manner.
At the same time, working with difficult people can sometimes mean just working with folks who are different. It takes good judgment and discernment to understand how people are wired and what makes them tick. You have to be able to assess people and situations quickly, get at underlying drivers and personal motivations, and cultivate a deep understanding of cross-cultural differences that exist between people from various backgrounds and experiences.
Having a highly productive and sustainable impact in any organization requires influence without authority. Learning how to get things done with and through others is one of the only ways to create long-term success in any of your professional endeavors. Make sure to catch next week's episode of the Tales from the C-Suite podcast with my guest Kevin Silva to learn more how to be successful at the top of any organization.

There are two ways that a company can have a culture. They can have culture by design or culture by default. Culture by design is being intentional about what you want your employees to experience in their day-to-day work. Culture by default is allowing unspoken behavioral norms and counterproductive work behaviors to take root and create a poor working environment for everyone.
Every company generally has their mission statement and corporate values written on some wall or in an employee handbook. This is a good first step but then you have to ask how do employees experience culture. Culture is experienced as the sum of leadership behaviors in your life as an employee. Most cultures as written are quite aspirational. When the aspirational culture is demonstrated by the leadership behaviors you have a company that is in harmony. When these behaviors are not modeled by senior leadership you have a company in chaos.
Tune in to next week's episode of the Tales from the C-Suite podcast with my guest Kevin Silva. We discuss how CHROs can shape culture in an organization and why this is so important to creating an environment where people can thrive. Kevin also highlights the partnerships between CEOs and CHROs, working together with cross-functional colleagues to drive enterprise strategic goals and priorities, and building a strong bench and talent pipeline in your organization.

Developing a high-performing executive leadership team takes time, diligence, and commitment. When a new senior team is starting to form there is excitement about the possibilities for the future. Every team member has a different skill-set that they bring to the table so it is important to take time to learn about each other's styles and leadership characteristics.
For new c-suite leaders joining the team from outside the organization, it is important to balance bringing in fresh, new ideas with an understanding and appreciation for the institutional knowledge that seasoned veterans bring to the table. This is best accomplished by listening to each other and modeling transparency, candor, and mutual respect.
One of the most important things for any executive leadership team is to get aligned around a shared vision, mission, and purpose and then cascading this down to lower levels of the organization. The executive leadership team must always know where they are headed and provide clarity for employees across all level of the organization.
I discuss these important factors with Sarah Emily Clarke, the Chief Supply Chain & Technology Officer at American Eagle Outfitters in next week's episode of the Tales from the C-Suite podcast. Relationally intelligent leaders understand the importance of extending trust to there colleagues and team members rather than demanding it from them. When you extend trust you give people the benefit of the doubt, create a positive work environment where people will want to exceed expectations, and create the conditions of psychological safety that enables employees to thrive. This is one of the best ways to accelerate the development of productive and sustainable professional relationships.
I discuss this with Sarah Emily Clarke, the Chief Supply Chain & Technology Officer at American Eagle Outfitters in the next episode of the Tales from the C-Suite. Other topics we cover during our interview include: (a) building a strong team culture; (b) integrating into a new executive leadership team; (c) authentic and empathetic leadership; (d) capitalizing on the power of AI in the workplace; and (e) grooming talent to build a strong bench for the future.

In every organization, you will cross paths with people who are difficult to work with. You could cross paths with an arrogant narcissist. You could get stuck on a project or initiative with a cynical and passive aggressive coworker. You could report into a new leader who is a perfectionistic micromanager. You could have a new hire join your team who loves to be the center of attention. You could inherit a team member who is an overly eager people pleaser.
The challenge is always trying to figure out how these people are wired and what makes them tick. What motivates and drives their actions and behaviors? What are their personal values and beliefs? How do they handle conflict? How can you get things done with them? Taking time to explore these issues will help you work with these people in the short-term and long run.
In our next episode of the Tales in the C-Suite podcast, I explore this topic in great detail with Sarah Emily Clarke, the Chief Supply Chain & Technology Officer at American Eagle Outfitters. In addition to this, we discuss the differences between being promoted into the c-suite and coming in from outside the organization, finding your authentic voice and building a strong leadership brand and reputation, and overcoming challenges and adversity that inevitably surfaces in everyone's career journey.

There are four critical factors that every c-suite executive must practice to successfully integrate into any organization. First, is role clarity and alignment. A new senior leader must have a deep understanding of their mandate and then set a compelling and inspiring vision for their people to follow. Two, is stakeholder relationship management. Who are the key stakeholders and relationships you must build on the board, with your peer group, and with team members in your function and/or business unit?
Three, focuses on navigating culture. Your new organization is different than the place you came from. There are unspoken norms and rules of engagement that you will need to learn if you are to be successful in partnering with cross-functional colleagues and leading your people and teams. And lastly, getting some early wins. The organization brought you in for a reason, and you must be intentional about creating a strong brand and reputation early on in your tenure with the company.

You should never chase a title or specific role in your career. This can lead to burn out, jealousy of others, and frustration when things sometimes don’t come to pass. Instead, focus on taking on new challenges and opportunities. Experiment with different types of roles and levels of responsibility.
One of my early mentors had a great saying, “you do good work, more work will come.” That’s a motto to live your professional life by. That’s because the quality or your work will always give you more opportunities to take on greater scale and scope in your career.
