Before Crude Oil in Nigeria, Eastern Region was recorded the fastest growing economic region in Nigeria, Africa and competing with the rest of the world.

At 39, Michael Okpara was the youngest Premier of Nigeria and the Eastern Region for six years.

Then, Igweọcha which was renamed after a British called Harcourt, now known as Port Harcourt was part of the Eastern region. The popular Trans Amadi Industrial Area was set up by the government of Eastern region under the visionary leader, Dr. Michael Ọkpara.

Do you know of Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt and Enugwu? They were set up by Michael Ọkpara.

Michelin Tyre Factory in Port Harcourt was set up under his government. Obudu Cattle Ranch, the Owere shoe Industry, the Aba Textile Mill& Port Harcourt Sea Port Expansion were the focus of the government of eastern region and accomplishments of Dr. Michael Ọkpara.

All these were achieved without crude oil but coal, limestone, palm oil and other agricultural produce of the Eastern region.

You cannot talk about Port Harcourt without mentioning Trans Amadi Industrial Estate, this man made it possible.

His father was a labourer but he would later study and became a medical doctor. He practised what he called "pragmatic socialism." He focused on development. It was during his Government that it was reported that Malaysia got palm trees from Nigeria. He attracted many foreign investors and focused more on agriculture, then the economy boomed. Under his leadership, eastern region became the envy of other regions because of the incomparable and uncompetitive progress of the region.

Other countries came to learn from the blueprint of the region.

As the genocidal war broke out, he went to exile in Ireland and practised medicine there. He returned in 1979 and would later die in 1984.

University of Agriculture is named after him in Ụmụdike. The federal university is called Michael Ọkpara University Ụmụdike. A crop Research center was also named after him. In Abuja, street is named after him. Ọkpara Avenue and Ọkpara Square Enugwu were named after him. Ọkpara Hostel UNN was named after him.

Dr. Micheal Ọkpara was a selfless leader, industrialist anyone who wants to make headway in leadership should emulate.

If the so called selfish politicians we have today could think half like this man, I am certain Nigeria would have turned to eldorado.
