Hausas Have Traditionally Been Hunters For Centuries

I lived in Sokoto and Kebbi. The claim circulating on social media that Hausas and other Northerners do not hunt is false. It is borne out of ignorance. Fulbe people, also known as Fula or Fulani, generally do not hunt. However, Hausas and many other Northern ethnicities hunt, and they hunt more than Southerners.

Because of their skill at hunting, they were employed in large numbers as houseguards in Southern Nigeria. When you see a mai guard with a bow and arrow, that is what he and his ancestors employed to hunt game in the past and till today.

In Kebbi, they used to hunt and bring game for my late father, Justice Jean Omokri.

Pius Utomi, a photographer from Okpanam, Delta State, took this photo almost a decade ago. These fellows are local Hausa hunters. Look at their guns. Is it not similar to that of the Uromi sixteen?

Before Independence, the British found Hausas helpful for their colonial police force due to their hunting and warrior skills. That is why the first police force in Nigeria was the Hausa Constabulary, formed in 1879 with 1200 Hausas.

The Hausa Constabulary evolved into the Royal West African Frontier Force and then the Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment, which eventually became the Nigerian Army.

There is nothing like Hausa-Fulani. That is a coinage of the Lagos-Ibadan media. You are either Hausa or Fulani.

Now, many of the bandits who abduct, kidnap, kill and maim are not even Nigerians. They are rarely ever of Hausa origin. Some may be foreign Fulani. However, many are former members of Muammar Gaddafi's mercenary army, with a lot of them being of Malian origin.

The reason that insecurity spiked in Nigeria in 2011 is because after Gaddafi was killed on Jumu'ah, October 20, 2011, his Black mercenary army fled Libya Southward. Today, they are disturbing the peace of West African countries, not just Nigeria.

Sadly, the same President Obama who caused this did not lift a finger to help us in West Africa. We are still suffering the consequences of his disastrous foreign policy in Libya.

In conclusion, there are over 250 ethnic nationalities in Northern Nigeria. Not every Northerner is a Hausa or Fulani.

Please stop lynching and mobbing people out of ignorance.

To my fellow Southern brothers and sisters saying that Northerners do not give Southerners justice, and that the Uromi mob which killed the sixteen Northerners are justified, I will urge you to cast your mind back to 2015 when Yunusa Dahiru (alias Yellow) fell in love with an underaged Ese Oruru, who was living in Bayelsa.

They eloped to Kano, where Yunusa married Ese, who was thirteen years old then, at the palace of the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Because of her age, the marriage was treated as statutory rape, although Ese said she willingly followed Yunusa to Kano out of love or maybe lust.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce and I made a lot of trouble and noise, and Punch Newspapers carried the story. When the attention of the Kano State Government was drawn to the issue, Yunusa was arrested and extradited from Kano to Bayelsa, even when the Emir of Kano appealed on his behalf. In Bayelsa, Yunusa was prosecuted and sentenced to twenty-six years imprisonment. He is still in prison there.

A Northerner (General Buhari) was President when this happened, but he did not use federal might to save Yunusa. A Northerner was the then Inspector General of Police. Yet, the police did not stop the prosecution of Yunusa. No Northerners protested, rioted, or started hashtags because of Yunusa, who was himself a young man barely out of his teens.

This is a Northern State, Kano, arresting a Northerner from Kano and willingly handing him over to a Southern State, Bayelsa, to face justice.

My dear brothers and sisters from Southern Nigeria, let us learn from that act of the Kano State Government and its people and control our mouths and stop making a bad situation even worse by talking as if Nigeria began today.

One good turn deserves another. Please Google the Yunusa incident. I was at the forefront of the struggle to get justice for Ese Oruru's mother. And now I am telling you, as a Bendelite (Edo people know what I mean), that the only way justice can be served is if those behind the Uromi mob killings of the sixteen Northerners are brought to book and made to pay for their crime just as Yunusa Dahiru paid for his.

Dangerous Misinformation: Misleading Video from Burkina Faso Used to Promote False Narrative Against Nigeria

A disturbing trend of deliberate misinformation is spreading online, with a misleading video falsely claiming to depict a violent attack in Northern Nigeria. The reality, however, is that the video actually shows a horrific attack in Pama, Burkina Faso, carried out by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) terrorist group between January 29 and 30, 2025.

Shockingly, in the video, JNIM deployed child fighters boys as young as 9 to 13 armed with automatic weapons to attack Burkinabe security forces. But instead of acknowledging the true source of this footage, some unscrupulous elements and religious platforms are deliberately repurposing it to push a false and dangerous narrative, falsely tagging it as an attack against Christian communities in Nigeria.

This misleading video does not exist in isolation. It coincides with a well-orchestrated effort to brand Nigeria as a country hostile to religious freedom. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has recently accused the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, of tolerating or failing to effectively respond to religiously motivated attacks by non-state actors.

While Nigeria continues to battle security challenges, pushing a false narrative using unrelated foreign incidents only inflames tensions and puts communities at risk. This is a clear case of disinformation one that could have serious and deadly consequences if left unchecked.

The deliberate spread of misleading content serves only one purpose: to create panic, fuel resentment, and further divide Nigeria along religious lines. Those behind this misinformation are not just misinformed individuals they are part of a calculated campaign to paint Nigeria as a failed state where religious minorities are under systematic attack. By using a Burkina Faso terrorist attack to fit their pre-planned narrative, these actors are attempting to distort the truth and manipulate international perception. The implications of such reckless propaganda are severe.

Nigeria is already grappling with complex security challenges, from insurgency in the Northeast to banditry in the Northwest and communal clashes in the Middle Belt. The last thing the country needs is a surge in religiously motivated tensions based on falsehoods.

By spreading this misleading video, these groups are not just lying they are playing with fire. A false narrative of “Christian persecution” in Nigeria could escalate violence, justify retaliatory attacks, and provoke unnecessary international interventions based on misinformation.

It is crucial for Nigerians and the international community to fact-check information before sharing it. The spread of fake news can have deadly consequences, and those who knowingly push such false narratives should be held accountable. The security agencies must also track and expose the originators of this misinformation campaign to prevent further attempts to destabilize the country.

Nigeria has enough challenges to deal with. The last thing it needs is a manufactured crisis fueled by those who thrive on chaos. The public must reject this dangerous manipulation and demand truth over propaganda.
