Should I be elected Premier, I am committing to an inquiry into the total orphaned and inactive well clean-up liability, and a comprehensive review and complete overhaul of the Alberta Energy Regulator.
Albertans deserve to know the true extent of the liability they are on the hook for. It is the responsibility of companies to clean up these sites, and to do it in a timely manner. It is high time to have a grown up conversation about what exactly the cost is and how to get the job done.
The regulator needs a complete review and overhaul, it has lost the public’s trust.
This is part of how we build an economy that works for people, by ensuring that companies who have committed to pay for clean-up fulfill the promises they have made to Albertans. I believe in the polluter pay principle, and I would enforce it. Right now the UCP government wants to download these liabilities onto families and let profitable corporations off the hook. That isn’t fair.
My concerns about the AER and commitments to change are underscored not just by unaccounted environmental liabilities, but by the recent water contamination issues arising from Kearl Lake and the regulator’s decision to reconsider the Grassy Mountain open-pit mining operation.
The Alberta Energy Regulator has failed in its duty to act in the public interest and protect our environment and safeguard the health and well-being of Albertans.
Albertans have been clear that they don’t support mining our mountains for coal and they expect the regulator to protect the air, land, and water — that is the entire point of a regulator.
Danielle Smith is proceeding with a plan to use $20 billion of Albertans’ money to clean up a mess that most of them had no hand in making.
I would cancel her ridiculous RStar program and hand the bill back to the those responsible. This was a deal — companies get access to resources, but they have responsibility to clean up after themselves. I will not allow the Alberta public to get stuck with this liability.”
Finally, I would also take necessary legislative action to ensure energy companies pay back outstanding municipal taxes. Figures released this week by the Rural Municipalities of Alberta put the total figure owed at roughly $300 million.
RMA President Paul McLaughlin said this week that we need the “AER to be a regulator, not a cheerleader” and I couldn’t agree with him more.

No word from Danielle Smith yet. Must be hard when you spend your life advocating for private healthcare then promise voters they won’t have to pay to see a family doctor then.. suddenly within weeks you need to act on your promise. Will she??
The UCP refused to talk about their risky plan to gamble with your CPP during the election.
Prediction: this fall, they’ll release a “report” they will cook up to justify gambling with your CPP.
You can count on us to protect your CPP and keep your insurance costs down.
Congratulations @oliviachow on your election as Mayor of Toronto! We’re excited to work together toward a new growth framework that empowers municipalities to better serve the needs of our growing pop. and reflects the realities of life for all Canadians in 2023 and beyond. 1/3
Congratulations to Olivia Chow on being elected Mayor of Toronto! @oliviachow
Your service to the city is already legendary and I know full well that the years to come will be next level.
Busy day at the office!
I will address the media and all Albertans from the Legislature grounds tomorrow.
A better future is what we promised Albertans and what our Official Opposition intends to deliver for them.
For the record, the Alberta NDP has a 20-member "Council of the Elected" ready and happy to advise on the priorities of Albertans living here in Edmonton.
Time is running out to vote for a better future. 🍊
For health care.
For pensions.
For children.

For seniors.
For you.
For all Albertans.

Friends, we won Calgary-Glenmore by six votes in 2015. If you haven't voted yet, get to the polls. This election is so close, and every single vote matters. 🗳️
"Impulsive," "rash," "dangerous," and with "the potential to... send billions of dollars in capital out of Alberta": those are the words UCP candidates use to describe Danielle Smith.
It's time to turn the page. Go vote! 🗳️
⛰️Vote today to protect our mountains from coal mining.
🌲Vote today for legislated protection for our parks.
🥾 Vote today to ensure families can venture out on incredible hikes WITHOUT the fee hikes!
Danielle Smith has made her plans clear.
A UCP government puts your health care, your pension, the RCMP and more at risk.
We can't handle four years of this. Let's vote for better.
I see #VoteNDP is trending on Twitter. Feels like it on the doors too! Maybe all the pollsters have it wrong. There's a loud Rachel vote to be sure, but also a quiet Rachel vote. People lending their vote 🍊 this election #ableg
