ਪਾਥਰੁ ਪੂਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਣੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਾਕਤ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ “Worshipping stones, one cannot meet Hari (God); the faithless cynic is lost and ruined.”
Guru Nanak Dev Ji (Raag Basant, Ang 1191)
ਪਾਥਰ ਕਈ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਧਰਿਆ ॥ ਜਾਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਭਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ “The faithless cynic installs many stone idols; serving them, he is never satisfied.”
Guru Arjan Dev Ji (Raag Bilaaval, Ang 835)
ਪਾਥਰੁ ਪੂਜਿ ਪੂਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਖੁਸੀ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ “Worshipping and worshipping stones, one does not obtain happiness from Hari.”

ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪੋਥੀ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੀ ਰਚਸਿ ॥ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗੁਟਕ ਗੁਟਕਾ ਕੀ ਘਸਿ ਘਸਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ “First they create idols of stone, then they rub and scrub them and worship them bit by bit.”
Bhagat Kabir Ji (Ang 1370 – one of the strongest direct condemnations)
ਪਾਹਨ ਪੂਜਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਖੁਲੈ ਬੇਦ ॥ “Worshipping stones, one cannot meet the Supreme Lord; this secret is not revealed in the Vedas.”

ਕਬੀਰ ਪਾਹਨੁ ਪੂਜਿਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮੁ ॥ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿਆ ਤਿਹ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨ ਕਰੀ ॥੧੮੪॥ “Kabeer, nothing is gained by worshipping stones; I have meditated on them in many ways, but they show no mercy.”
