It’s not that big of a deal. It’s an artifact.

It is a sacred stone placed in the Kaaba that Muslims believe was originally sent down from Paradise and was set into the Kaaba by Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmael (Isma’il).

It symbolizes obedience to God, unity of believers, and continuity with the faith of Abraham. During pilgrimage, Muslims may kiss or touch it if possible, following the example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who kissed it because it is a stone from Heaven and our prophet loved Heaven.

According to Islamic tradition, the Black Stone (al-Hajar al-Aswad) was originally white.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The Black Stone descended from Paradise, and it was whiter than milk, then the sins of the children of Adam made it black.”

This narration is found in collections such as Jami’ at-Tirmidhi.

Muslim scholars have generally understood this in two ways:

1.Literal understanding

The stone was physically white when it came from Paradise, and Allah caused it to darken over time as a sign of humanity’s sins and disobedience.

2.Symbolic lesson

The blackening serves as a reminder that sins leave an effect, just as they darken the human heart spiritually. The stone becomes a visible symbol of mankind’s moral condition.

In Islam, the Black Stone is not believed to forgive sins by itself or possess divine powers. Rather, it is honored because of its connection to Allah, Paradise, Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام), and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Many Muslims also reflect on a famous statement by Umar ibn al-Khattab:

“I know that you are only a stone. You can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah kiss you, I would not have kissed you.”

This highlights that the stone is
respected and not worshipped.
