Hello friends!
Iโve today declared to contest for the presidency of the Sierra Leone Bar Association in the upcoming elections during its annual general meeting on 17-18 May 2024.
I am running on a vision to RECLAIM THE BAR.
In the coming days and weeks, I shall be sharing with you critical aspects of my manifesto.
I sincerely promise that with the help of God Almighty, the membership of the bar will reclaim ownership of the bar association and direct its destiny and no one else.
I thank you, and God bless you. ๐ธ๐ฑ
Tragic news from Sierra Leone: two girls have lost their lives, seven are currently trapped, half a dozen women are in jail, and two families are grieving.
Salamatu Jalloh, 13 and Kadiatu Bangura, 17 have tragically lost their lives due to complications after undergoing bondo initiationโa practice that includes the partial or complete removal of the clitoral hood.
No parent sends their child to the bondo cutter out of hatred or a desire for them to die, but the practice of bondo is deadly.
How many more lives of girls and women must be shattered due to the failure of Sierra Leonean lawmakers to abolish female genital cutting?
This TV news report is brought to you by #VickieRemoePrize grantee Marian @AmariaBangura reporting from Kambia District in Northern Sierra Leone.
FGM survivor activists @KamSarian@TheAlima@turayneneh and countless others have told us the damage and lifelong trauma of bondo initiation but their voices continue to fall on deaf ears.
Sarian and Neneh through their respective orgs Lose The Knife Keep The Drum, and Amazonian Initiative have shown that it is possible for girls to go through a bloodless rite of passage, no cutting, no trauma, no death.
Lawmakers will tell you that there is a law in #SierraLeone that protects children, that you have to be 18. There isnโt.
Over 80% of women in SL have gone through Bondo and given these recent events, the practice of cutting girls isnโt going away anytime soon.
