Sri Lanka has introduced a temporary 50% surcharge on applicable customs import duties for selected motor vehicles, effective from today (16) and valid for three months.

The measure was announced through an extraordinary gazette issued by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, under Section 10A of the Customs Ordinance, as amended. It applies to both general and preferential import duty bases.

The surcharge covers a wide range of vehicles, including passenger transport vehicles, motor cars, station wagons, racing cars, ambulances, prison vans, hearses, motorhomes, and golf cars, across multiple engine types and specifications.

However, imports backed by Letters of Credit (L/C) opened on or before May 15, 2026, are exempt from the new surcharge. The order was issued under the authority of Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Finance Minister.
