“fandom, identity, entertainment”
Weird that even people in prediction markets can’t come up with financially beneficial reasons for people to trade.
It always comes down to monetizing people gambling.
They shouldn’t be surprised when the regulators come knocking
a conversation yesterday where we were discussing toxic flow on prediction markets and essentially part of the prediction market liquidity problem is really a microstructure problem: outside sports, the flow is toxic all the way down
makers earn the spread but bleed to informed traders who only trade when they know the price is wrong. to survive they need uninformed flow to offset it. equities have passive allocators and etfs, sportsbooks have recreational money. that base lets makers quote tight while still getting picked off by sharps
prediction markets outside sports don't have that base.
macro questions mostly attracts people who think they've priced it better than you, so nearly every fill is toxic, maker EV goes negative, and they widen or leave
i believe that thin books are a flow-quality problem, not a demand one
and uninformed (mostly) flow can't be bought with incentives. it comes from people with a non-financial reason to be there: fandom, identity, entertainment
that's why sports works and macro doesn't
Been in London for a bit now, definitive winners below
Indian food: London >> NYC
Architecture: London > NYC
Subways: NYC >>>>>>> London
How TF do you not have AC and still charge me £10 for a 35min subway??
America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.
Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.
@mattyglesias@binarybits This is the same problem that software engineers deal with. AI produces too much code and humans are bogged down reviewing it. The solution is clear: you need AI to do some of the review once it gets good enough
"Public data used without permission" isn't this an oxymoron?
I'm not that sympathetic to this view. Data is important to AI labs, but if the business was really just the data shouldn't we let people cook and compete margins down? To me the whole public data -> non-profit argument feels very entitled and minimizes any value on top of the data the AI labs are providing.
Jason in the video he literally said he legally cannot arrest Bibi and is advocating for action by Federal Gov. He is literally just using his platform to advocate for what he believes in. Unclear what the problem is?
Maybe you can say this issue is outside the scope of NYC politics, but obviously Mamdani has a global platform. What’s the issue using it?
@KtBird9@Jason Just to politely add some numbers.
US Debt: $40T
SP500 Combined Mkt Cap: $70T
This won't be solved by a small amount of equity, unfortunately.
@2021Ufo@bradchattergoon@ctjlewis So are you acknowledging that the US-only policy is bad for US academics?
It’s okay to also say that pHDs don’t matter anymore but that’s shifting the conversation.
@tengyanAI Isn’t there an implicit assumption you’re making that they did zero work to understand/limit those risks in the months before this release? Would it be reasonable to be worried and once you’ve don’t the safety work to release it?
@emre_mayo@davidshor I think you missed the point. You fit your narrative on to a random graph. I'm not even disagreeing, but the data in this thread isn't consistent with your hypothesis. An alternative theory could be that many Orthodox Jews immigrated from eastern europe and don't like socialism
*TRUTH SOCIAL TO LICENSE ITS DATA TO FINANCIAL SERVICE COS:AXIOS
Pretty sure this means Trump is just charging HFT's to get quicker access to his Truths
@TheStalwart I listened to this episode. It's clear she does not care for data centers. What is her plan to "figure out the best structure"? What is 1 year schedule for that plan? Would've appreciated at least one question like this.
