Caleb Williams has been getting clowned for his reaction to what looks like a week to week hamstring injury. I'm going to admit it’s kind of funny. The quarterback who got labeled soft for crying in his mom's arms at USC cried again, on a cart, over a hamstring that may not cost him more than a few weeks.
Fans spend athletes' entire careers demanding they show how much they care, and when one of them shows it in a way we didn't ask for, we turn him into a punchline. Bears fans should know this better than anyone, because their last franchise quarterback got destroyed for the opposite reason.
Williams heard all of this before he was ever drafted. In November 2023, after USC lost to Washington, he climbed into the stands and sobbed on his mother's shoulder. Robert Mathis called it soft. OutKick ran a column saying it proved he wasn't ready for the NFL, and plenty of people used it as the reason Chicago should pass on him with the first pick. His answer then was that it was raw emotion and that it's who he is, and he has never walked it back.
That last franchise quarterback was Jay Cutler, and his whole reputation in Chicago was that he looked like he didn't care. The internet called him Smokin' Jay, and his body language after interceptions turned into its own genre of highlight. In the NFC Championship Game in January 2011, he hurt his knee against the Packers and spent the second half standing on the sideline and riding the exercise bike, with no towel and no tears. Players around the league went after him on Twitter while the game was still going. Deion Sanders said in the playoffs you'd have to drag him off the field. Mark Schlereth said it would take a stretcher to get him out of a championship game. Cutler had a sprained MCL. Chicago spent eight years begging its quarterback to show some emotion, and now it has one who can't hide it.
Michael Jordan might be the most competitive person who ever played a sport, and the most famous picture of him on the internet is him crying at his Hall of Fame induction in 2009. It's been a meme for more than a decade, and people post it every time somebody loses.
Cam Newton got criticized in 2015 for dancing and dabbing too much while the Panthers won. A few months later he got called a sore loser for giving one-word answers and walking out of his press conference after Super Bowl 50. The same critics had a problem with how he acted after winning and after losing, four months apart.
Fans accept anger from athletes as proof they're competing: a fist pump, screaming at a lineman, a helmet slammed on the bench after a loss. Crying after a loss or after an injury gets treated as weakness, and I have never heard anyone give a good reason why one counts as caring and the other doesn't.
If you don't want a franchise quarterback who can't hide it when his hamstring gives out on the way to the end zone, the alternative is the one who jogs off after a pick-six like he's got a tee time. Fans call that guy the one who doesn't care, which is probably the most common insult in sports, and I've never heard a fan say out loud that they'd take him.
Williams is week to week. The Bears play the Eagles next Monday night.
I’ve heard the saying that “God gives his toughest battles to his toughest soldiers.” But when I see the disciples that Jesus chose and suffered for His name sake, I don’t see Him choosing the “toughest soldiers”, as I learn about men and women in the past and even today who have laid down their lives for Jesus, once again I don’t see God choosing His “toughest soldiers.” But I see a strong and mighty God choosing weak men and woman, and empowering them by His Holy Spirit to face some of the toughest battles and be used for His glory.
I once thought I was a “tough soldier” until I met Jesus, I then realized that I’m so weak without Him, and apart from Jesus I can’t do anything. I need Jesus daily. The only way that I can truly become who God wants me to be and truly do what God wants me to do, is not by my power not by my might, but only by The Spirit of The Living God. Thank you Jesus.
@RawCombatTV Your emojis imply he did something cool? Dude did that for a girl that forgot about him the second she walked away. Now he’s stuck with charges and getting sued for some girl that couldn’t keep her mouth shut.
I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow.
I will overcome this.
I will not be deterred.
I will return.
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
He came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and His kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the Giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins,
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen. 🙏🏼
The Bible openly acknowledges the tension of seeing wicked people prosper while the righteous suffer. In passages like Psalm 73 and Jeremiah 12, people question God honestly and feel discouraged by this apparent injustice. The turning point is realizing that this success is temporary, while faithfulness has lasting, eternal value. Jesus reinforces this in Matthew 5 by redefining “blessing” beyond immediate, visible outcomes.
what you see now isn’t the full picture..justice and meaning unfold over a longer timeline. 🙏🏿
The world said this about Jesus.
“Some said, “He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”
John 10:20
God The Father said this to Jesus.
“Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.”
Mark 9:7
Jesus reminds us as His Followers
“—If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!”
Matthew 10:25
The world calls us crazy, but God calls us Sons and Daughters.
