Before India had a single standard time, Mumbai followed its own.
“Bombay Time” ran about 38-39 minutes behind what we now know as IST. The city resisted switching over for decades, and for a long time both times existed side by side.
A broken clock?
Or an accidental reminder of the days when Mumbai quite literally lived in a different time zone?
This image below is from my ebook Hidden Stories of Old Mumbai Vol I, where I’ve collected some of the lesser-known stories that make Mumbai unique.

This clock at Mahalaxmi appears to be showing the wrong time.
Or is it?
Meet the Prince’s Triumphal Arch, built in 1905 on Bhulabhai Desai Road outside the Mahalaxmi Temple.
The arch was erected to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales, the future King George V, to Mumbai. Most people pass beneath it without a second glance.
When I photographed it recently, my phone showed 3:40 pm.
The clock on the arch showed 3:10 pm.
Thirty minutes behind.
Which raises an intriguing possibility.
The arch dates to 1905, the same year Indian Standard Time was introduced across British India. Mumbai, however, was famously reluctant to give up its own local time. “Bombay Time” ran roughly 39 minutes behind IST, and the city continued using it alongside official time for decades before finally abandoning it in 1950.
So is this clock simply inaccurate?
Or is it an accidental reminder of a time when Mumbai kept its own time, quite literally?
I don’t know for certain.
The century-old limestone arch at the entrance of the B.D. Petit Parsee General Hospital, Breach Candy, is one of South Mumbai’s most distinctive yet overlooked heritage landmarks.
Built during the hospital’s early years in the first decade of the 20th century, this grand gateway has welcomed generations of Parsis and Mumbaikars. Today, however, visible signs of decay raise concerns about its future.
A fascinating 1980 article from The Illustrated Weekly of India on the Parsis of Mumbai.
According to the article, Mumbai’s Parsi population grew from just 3,087 in 1780 (about 9.2% of the city’s population) to over 70,000 by 1961. The community, though small in number, played an outsized role in shaping the city’s business, industry, culture and philanthropy.
The article also notes that Parsis were India’s most urbanised community, with 94.2% living in urban areas.

1943: Petrol Shortage in Mumbai
This striking scene from February 1943 shows rows of idle cars during an acute fuel shortage in Mumbai. With World War II in full swing, petrol was strictly rationed, and private vehicles were often left parked for days.
For many, it meant going back to trams, local trains, or simply walking. The city slowed down… but never stopped.
A reminder that Mumbai has faced shortages before, and always found a way to keep moving. #OldMumbai
