In this article, I foreground the concept of "trans health dilemmas," or the dilemmatic health-seeking of trans communities that forces them to choose between trans-specific health needs and other health and social needs.

"Unpopular Academic Advice" #4: We should absolutely care about our students’ well-being. That’s a central part of mentoring. But we’re advisors, not therapists. Our role isn’t to offer nonstop affirmation; it’s to help students develop the emotional resilience they’ll need long after they leave our offices. In real life, no one is there to provide constant positive feedback, and learning to navigate criticism is an essential skill.
As I move into mid-career, I’ve realized that the real challenges in life are things like caring for family, managing health issues, or weathering unexpected crises. Compared to those, a rejected paper, an unfunded grant, or a tough seminar comment is trivial.
Supporting students means being kind and empathetic, and being honest. Preparing them not just to succeed in academia, but to handle the much larger challenges that life inevitably brings.
I’ll be teaching these exciting courses at UP Diliman next semester!
Looking forward to curating engaging readings and preparing meaningful activities for my students. ☺️

.@GretaThunberg: “I could talk for a very long time about our mistreatment and abuses in our imprisonment, but that is not the story. What happened here was that Israel— while continuing to worsen and escalate their genocide and mass destruction with genocidal intent, attempting to erase an entire nation in front of our very eyes—they once again violated international law by preventing humanitarian aid from getting into Gaza”
Therapy helps but let’s be clear. You can’t CBT your way out of capitalism. You can’t mindfulness your way out of racism. You can’t self care your way out of oppression. You can’t journal your way out of ableism. This isn’t about coping, it’s about deconstructing the systems.
Police at Mendiola carried Israeli-made IWI X95 rifles—the same weapons used to enforce genocide in Palestine. Since 2019, PH billions have funded Israeli arms. The same rifles that murder Palestinians are now used to terrorize Filipinos.

Why does sociology matter in policymaking?
Because when it’s absent, vulnerable sectors pay the price.
In this piece, I argue for the critical inclusion of sociological insights in policymaking using the proposed Parents Welfare Act as a case.

It's strange that journals are sending manuscripts out for peer review when the comments are minimal and can easily be assessed by the editor (e.g., formatting; inclusion of data statements; etc.).
There's rigor and then whatever this is!
