If HIV is Sexually Transmitted, Where Did It Actually Come From?

The earliest form of HIV came from a virus in primates called Simian Immunodeficiency Virus. In the early 1900s, a hunter in Central Africa likely came into direct contact with infected chimpanzee blood during hunting or butchering. If there were cuts or wounds, the virus could enter the bloodstream.

From there, the virus adapted to the human body over time and evolved into HIV-1 Group M, which is the strain responsible for the global HIV pandemic today.

Genetic studies point specifically to southeastern Cameroon, where the chimpanzee version of SIV is almost identical to modern HIV.
