Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed participated in the retreat “Beyond the 4th Cycle of the #UPR: Strengthening the Process for Transformative Human Rights Impact”. During the retreat, she moderated a session on Financial and Technical Assistance, focusing on strengthening institutional frameworks and resources for the implementation of #UPR recommendations. She also contributed to discussions by drawing on the #Maldives’ experience in advancing national ownership of the #UPR mechanism and effective implementation through the #NMIRF, as well as the innovative digital platforms such as the #NRTD and continuous capacity-building efforts.
The retreat is being held in Rabat, Morocco, from 5–6 June 2026, and is hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco in partnership with OHCHR and UPR Info to reflect on lessons from the fourth UPR cycle and strengthen the implementation of recommendations.

Today marks a proud and historic milestone for the nation as the Maldives is elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term — for the first time in our 60 years of membership at the United Nations.
This achievement reflects the trust and confidence that the international community places in our nation and in our commitment to constructive multilateral engagement.
As a Small Island Developing State, the Maldives understands firsthand the urgent challenges faced by vulnerable nations, from climate change and economic resilience to sustainable development. Our seat at ECOSOC gives us a stronger platform to advocate for the priorities and aspirations of small island developing States and developing countries around the world.
Together with our partners, the Maldives will work to strengthen international cooperation, accelerate progress on sustainable development, and shape a ECOSOC that will result in fair finance, stronger delivery, and resilient futures.
On this World Environment Day, let us remind ourselves that our future is inseparable from the health of our planet. As a Small Island Developing State standing at the frontline of climate adversities, we are cognisant of the urgent need to protect and preserve our environment.
We reaffirm our nation's commitment to advancing ambitious climate actions, including the Project Solar City initiative, strengthening disaster preparedness and early-warning systems, and promoting community-based adaptation and ecosystem protection methods.
The planetary crises we face today driven by climate change are affecting people, ecosystems, and natural resources worldwide. Addressing these challenges requires global action focused on climate adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable practices supported by greater awareness and shared responsibility. Let us all work together to protect and preserve our environment for a safer and more prosperous future.
