Rural India is a different game. You cannot just walk into any area and expect a warm welcome. The CJP was trying to push their luck. Now they will go around and start crying victim and accusing the BJP.
But let me assure you that BJP or no BJP, these morons will get the ass-whipping of their life. I was surprised it hadn't happened until now. How do I know? I speak from experience: I faced hostility in the villages I worked in, despite going through a Member of Parliament.
You have to earn their trust. They are extremely wary of outsiders. Their lives are hard, and they don't like people coming in, especially from cities, and imposing their ways on them. Their natural impulse is, "Who the heck is this person?" They have gone through so many disappointments that they hate outsiders, especially outsiders interested in their children.
I remember once going to a Hindu preacher/activists house, and he lived in such a hostile neighbourhood that he had to sleep with a gun under his pillow, as in the night Christian missionaries would attack him as he was trying to counter their propaganda.
I asked him whether this work is worth it. He told me that if he did not do it, these people would convert the whole area, and then they would start conducting anti-national activities. He couldn't wait for the government to stop them, so he decided to give his life to this cause. He successfully drove all the missionaries out of that area. He still works there, and all the tribals love him.
The CJP is very lucky that they came out relatively unscathed. Getting an odd slap is part of the game. Sometimes rural India can be a one-way journey. You go inside, and then the village eats you up, and no law and order machinery will care if the village is sufficiently remote. Villages can be a libertarian nightmare.
