People say there’s no magic in books but the fact that you can string words together to create a series of visions in someone else’s brain is still our greatest achievement as a species.
Steve Jobs on How To Be Creative:
“When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something.
It seemed obvious to them after a while.
That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things.
And the reason they were able to do that was that they've had more experiences or they have thoughtmore about their experiences than other people...
Unfortunately, that's too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven't had very diverse experiences.
So they don't have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem.
The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.”
our mom was right. it’s the damn phone.
2 weeks without internet can reversed 10 years of cognitive decline.
checking our phone 200 times per day is literally shrinking our brain. we know this but we’re addicted.
Stress shortens your DNA. But one state can repair it. And it's not sleep. At the ends of your chromosomes are protective caps called telomeres. They prevent DNA from fraying. Every time a cell divides, telomeres get shorter. When they're too short, the cell dies. Scientists discovered something shocking: stress speeds up this clock dramatically. Elizabeth Blackburn won the Nobel Prize for discovering telomerase — the enzyme that repairs telomeres. For years, scientists believed it worked only in stem cells. They were wrong. Your mental and emotional state directly affects telomerase activity. Stress suppresses it. You don't age from time. You age from your state. A University of California study found that mothers caring for chronically ill children had telomeres equivalent to someone 10 years older than their peers. Stress literally cuts years off your life at the DNA level. Here's the most important part: Blackburn discovered that meditation increases telomerase activity by up to 30%. Not exercise. Not supplements.
Mental stillness.
Modern education is premised strongly on materialistic values. It is vital that when educating our children’s brains that we do not neglect to educate their hearts, a key element of which has to be the nurturing of our compassionate nature.
