SA Menswear Week celebrates over 90 designers for AW23

SA Menswear Week (SAMW) partnered with Week of Fashion to showcase over 106 designers in its biggest selection to date for the AW23 season. Held at Wonderland Film Studios, the 17th season of SAMW featured presentations from Cape Town Fashion Council’s Graduate Showcase, Week of Fashion Womenswear, and SA Menswear, including an exhibition with 18 designers from Ethiopia and Burundi. Discussions on the local fashion industry’s export markets and buyer mindset were also conducted by SheTrades, a women empowerment NGO.

“Our goal is to diversify and include designers who would not normally be showcased on such a platform,” said Kerry-Lee Bell, acting CEO of Cape Town Fashion Council. The CTFC aims to support up-and-coming local designers, graduates, and African designers, fostering collaboration and connection in the industry.

The showcase included designers such as Lara Klawikowski, Imprint ZA, and Masa Mara, as well as student designers from Markham x Fedisa and Redbat Posse. A prevalent theme was the growing awareness of fashion’s negative impact, leading designers to embrace sustainable practices like using upcycled materials in their collections.

SAMW’s Creative Director, Simon Deiner, highlighted the importance of industry networking and collaboration beyond fashion week events. The AW23 showcase aimed to bring industry stakeholders together to support the growth of South African fashion and foster connections within the fashion community.

In essence, SA Menswear Week’s AW23 showcase celebrated local fashion through a diverse selection of designers, emphasizing collaboration, sustainability, and industry networking as key components of the event.
