Meet Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh 11 PARA SF.
On 25 April 2025, Major Deepak Singh led a dangerous hostage rescue operation in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh, where two innocent construction workers had been kidnapped by NSCN KYA cadres.
The operation was extremely risky because the area was remote, forested and sensitive, and the lives of the kidnapped civilians were in immediate danger.
Acting on important intelligence, Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh took charge of the operation and decided to move close to the terrorists despite the heavy risk to his own life.
When the terrorists opened heavy fire, he continued to advance towards them with courage, calmness and complete focus on saving the hostages.
In the close-quarter encounter, Major Deepak Singh neutralised one terrorist at extremely close range and stopped the threat to the kidnapped civilians.
During the operation, he used his own body as a shield to protect a hostage and safely brought the innocent civilian out of danger.
He also injured another terrorist who tried to escape from the encounter site, showing quick decision-making and excellent tactical skill under pressure.
Because of his fearless leadership, the hostages were rescued safely, two hardcore insurgents were neutralised and a large quantity of weapons and war-like stores was recovered.
For this act of exceptional bravery, Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Shaurya Chakra on him during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on 8 June 2026.
Major Deepak Singh is a proud son of Manipur, and his courage has brought great honour to his state, his unit, the Parachute Regiment and the Indian Army.
His story is a powerful example of courage under fire, leadership in danger, quick decision-making and the spirit of service before self.
For every defence aspirant, his action is a real-life lesson in Officer Like Qualities and the true meaning of responsibility towards innocent lives.
Salute to Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh, Shaurya Chakra, for his extraordinary bravery and dedication to the nation.
