This is another brutally honest take from Ruben in the second half of the presser today... and it confirms exactly what I've said and thought all along.... there is too much outside influence in that dressing room which creates an almost impossible atmosphere to work in.
Fans influence & fuel the media circus
The media circus fuels the fanbase
The media circus influences the players
It doesn't matter what system we play or what manager we have, until the fans and media STOP creating a toxic environment, until they stop holiding every squad, player, academy prospect and manager to a standard from a once-in-a-lifetime period we had over 20 years ago and until they stop making everyone at the club constantly feel like they are underachieving the atmosphere will NOT improve and this team will not see success.
The online fanbase, if you can even call it that, has so much to answer for, you give the shitty journalists the clicks, you keep them turning over and coming back with more nonsense every week; you like and share so much negative shit we now have 1000's of fan cammers, crappy content creators and stupid ass aggregators spreading toxic shite towards the team and your fueling that! How can you possibly think thats a clever way to support your team??
Newsflash, its not.
This is single biggest reason we are not coming "back" anytime soon. No player, No manager and in fact No human can perform week in, week out to a high level when the feel constantly under scrutiny and more importantly constantly under-appreciated... its not "normal at the club the size of Utd" its reached a whole new level that is mentally killing EVERY player at the club and that joins the club.
Why do you think Mctominay, Rashford, Antony, Højlund are performing better AWAY from this m environment? Because other fan groups actually back them, support them and encourage them rather than constantly battering them.
Maybe I'm wrong for backing Amorim but I just don't think he's had a chance yet at all.
Came in, in November, with a United squad we can all agree was poor. Got a left back, in January, and had to deal with some crippling injuries (Licha, Amad, Mainoo, Zirkzee etc), had to try and install his system with little time between games, so I absolutely am not judging him for last season, at all.
We honestly looked decent in pre season, and I've seen a lot of positives so far in the first two games too. I am not using that Arsenal game as a badge of honour, but everyone I've spoken to agrees we deserved at least a point in that game, which, 15th last season vs 2nd, that's positive.
Against Fulham, we hit the post, missed a penalty, and had 2 or 3 very scoreable chances early on, they couldn't get out for the first 30 mins and I think if we put one or two away early we comfortably win that game. Bruno lost his head, and we lost the midfield because of it.
I think you can critique Amorim, sure, Mainoo should've come on in both games imo, the subs have been questionable. But he's also been crying out for a midfielder according to journalists. We all agree Baleba would be an unreal signing, right? Tier 1 journos are reporting that's his #1 priority. Clearly he sees the weaknesses too..
Lastly, on his system. He's not using Man United as some experiment of a 3,4,3.. He has a system that is his. He played it at Sporting, dominated the league and went unbeaten in the UCL before we got him in. We got him in to play his system, why are we so desperate to see him abandon that completely 2 games into the season? This idea that "his system doesn't work" is total BS. We've literally gotten results against the top 4 with it last season, it got us to a European final, it SHOULD have picked up 4 points at least so far this season. Yes, things went poorly in the second half on Sunday, that was happening in ETH's 4 back system too??? Why is it always the systems fault? We would get overran in midfield for the last few years playing a 4 back ffs.. I think the issue is we NEED a midfielder, like Baleba, and we haven't got one.
Sacking Amorim now just makes no sense to me, at all. Who will we bring in? And how long will they get before a bad run of results?
We can't keep going through managers ffs, Amorim said it last year, it will hurt. We will go through bad times, we will suffer. But good times are coming. Wish this fan base would stop being so toxic, and give the guy some patience. We need to rebuild, and a rebuild consists of pain.
The rebuild didn't start in November, it started this summer. It started by identifying issues (lack of goals, poor midfield, poor GK) and fixing them. The first issue and the biggest one, has hopefully been fixed with a new frontline. Hopefully we turn our attention to the midfield and GK next, whether that be getting one or two in this summer then more next summer (because we can't fix every issue in one summer), then so be it.
Remember Arteta came 8th two seasons in a row, before Arsenal started challenging. It will take time. It will hurt. But you need to put your faith in it working out.
Otherwise, we'll be in this same position in 6 months, 12 months, 18 months whenever the fan base decide they have had enough because we don't win every game.
David de Gea left Man United without saying farewell to Old Trafford due to uncertainty around his future.
The goalkeeper spent a year without a club and training on his own, before returning to deliver a standout season at Fiorentina.
Today, he got the moment he waited for. Forever a legend ❤️
