Meet Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto (Retd)

Ladakh’s first woman Army officer.

Ladakh’s first female skydiver.

A trailblazer who turned a childhood dream into a life of courage, adventure and service.

Born and raised in Spituk, Leh, she grew up watching military officers near the local Air Force station.

The presence of women in uniform and the events of the 1999 Kargil conflict inspired her to join the Armed Forces.

Her journey through the NCC strengthened her discipline and prepared her for a career in uniform.

Major Kolto received her Indian Army call letter in 2010.

After completing officer training in 2011, she served the nation for nearly a decade and rose to the rank of Major.

Her association with the Ladakh Scouts reflected her deep connection with the people and terrain of Ladakh.

But her achievements were not limited to military service.

She became the first woman from Ladakh to qualify as a solo skydiver.

She has successfully completed 54 solo skydives across India and Dubai.

She also participated in Indian Army women officers’ mountaineering expeditions.

After taking voluntary retirement, Major Kolto continued serving the people of Ladakh.

She has worked for veterans’ welfare, healthcare support in remote areas, skill development and assistance to ex-servicemen and Veer Naris.

In June 2026, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi felicitated her with the Veteran Achievers Award during his visit to the Fire and Fury Corps.

The honour recognised her exceptional contributions to veterans’ welfare, community development and nation-building.

Her guiding philosophy remains simple and powerful:

“If everyone else can do it, why can’t I?”

Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto’s journey proves that barriers can be broken through discipline, courage and determination.
