Reflecting on the horrific, cyclical irony that both my first (Sept 1, the day TX's ban went into effect) and last days of my first year of rabbinical school have been punctuated by devastating news about abortion.
What does the #SCOTUS leak have to do with rabbinical school?
“With let-them-eat-cake obliviousness, today, the majority pulls the ripcord and announces ‘colorblindness for all’ by legal fiat. But deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life.”
–JUSTICE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON
What would happen if migrants on boats with limited resources were also seen as brave explorers gifted with curiosity and wonder for depths unknown, I wonder.
My biggest takeaway from the Titan story is that we absolutely could have coordinated, multinational efforts to ensure no migrant dies crossing the sea and we choose not to.
Devastating to wake up on #TDOR to news of a mass shooting in CO at a gay nightclub that was hosting a drag show & had a drag brunch planned for today. Waking up prepared to mourn trans lives lost, learning there is still more to mourn.
May all their memories be a blessing 💔
"This is for the kids who die,
Black and white,
For kids will die certainly.
The old and rich will live on awhile,
As always,
Eating blood and gold,
Letting kids die."
- Langston Hughes, 1938
School shootings are not fucking acts of nature, like hurricanes and tornadoes. They're man-made acts of inaction, of cowardice, of corruption by all lawmakers who refuse to pass laws PROVEN BY DATA to stop preventable, senseless shootings like in Uvalde.
I’m proud to be a future rabbi for reproductive freedom! I’ve just signed onto @NCJW’s pledge to become a religious advocate and help protect my community’s access to safe and timely care. https://t.co/kbqHeSzKg8 #RabStudents4Repro#EmergingClergy4Repro#73Forward
Abortion bans are never about the sanctity of life. They are about power and control.

Abortion bans are a violation of religious freedom.
As a Jewish woman and as a future clergy member who will undoubtably be called on to counsel congregants on decisions relating to pregnancy, they are a violation of MY religious freedom.
To be clear: Despite what Politico is reporting tonight, Roe has not been overturned and abortion is still legal in the United States. While the draft opinion that Politico shared tonight is not official, the language is upsetting, shocking, and outrageous.
“Having a baby would preclude them from not only caring for their families as they felt it necessary, but also from serving the populations they feel called to teach, counsel, and treat. These women were taking this step to preserve and protect life, not to snuff it out.”
"A small group has a stranglehold on the story of abortion and faith in this country. They have succeeded in equating religion with opposition to abortion. Judaism teaches something very different." - Nancy Kasten

When factory workers are fired for leaving before a tornado
When teachers are scrambling on the floor for dollar bills to fund their classes
When healthcare workers are quitting from burnout because we refuse to stop a deadly virus
It's time to radically overhaul your society
🧵 As Texas 6-week abortion ban goes into effect today, some context on the reproductive health landscape this is occurring in. For years, GOP leaders have dismantled the family planning safety net. Much of TX is already without access to abortion, contraception, maternity care.
After you donate, contact your members of Congress and urge them to pass the Women's Health Protection Act. #WHPA would create a federal safeguard to protect against extreme, dangerous, and onerous abortion bans/restrictions, like #SB8 👉https://t.co/tg9VeZruFL
"As a woman and a native Texan, I am scared. As a future rabbi, I am furious." @abkarpel
Today, Texas's draconian 6-week abortion ban goes into effect, violating basic human rights and religious freedom.
