So THIS is what MAGA calls “merit.”

Donald Trump spent the last year preaching that jobs should be based on MERIT, not race, not gender, not diversity, not equity.

His administration dismantled DEI programs, purged federal workers, and helped create a federal workforce contraction in which roughly 300,000 Black women lost their government jobs.

We were told this was necessary because America had to stop supposedly giving jobs to “unqualified” people and return to “merit.”

Then Lindsey Graham dies. And who does Donald Trump recommend to replace a United States Senator?** Lindsey Graham’s sister.** Not because she had distinguished herself in foreign policy. Not because she had served in Congress. Not because she had demonstrated expertise in national security. Because she was Lindsey Graham’s sister.

And now, sitting in a debate seeking a full term in the United States Senate, a body responsible for declaring war, confirming national security officials, approving defense spending and shaping American foreign policy, she is asked about national security and admits:

“I’m not that informed on national security.”

But she supports the military.

You cannot make this hypocrisy up.

A Black woman can have degrees, decades of experience, glowing evaluations and an entire career of public service and MAGA will sneer that she must have been a “DEI hire.” But Donald Trump can recommend somebody’s sister, a white woman, for the UNITED STATES SENATE, despite her having virtually no relevant political or national-security experience, and suddenly nobody wants to talk about qualifications.

That tells you what their war on DEI was always really about.** “Merit” was never the standard. It was the slogan.** When Black people and women advance, MAGA demands résumés, credentials, experience and proof that we belong. When their friends, relatives and loyalists get the position, apparently the only qualification necessary is WHO YOU KNOW, or WHO YOU’RE RELATED TO.

They didn’t eliminate preferential treatment.

They changed who gets preferred.
