Update: Good news - the power outage has now been resolved, and captioning services have resumed on scheduled programming.
We sincerely apologise for this disruption to our live-captioning service, and thank you for your patience and understanding.
Power outage affecting live-captioning
We regret to inform you that tonight's live-captions for the following programs: 1 News at 6PM, Newshub Live at 6PM, and Netball World Cup will not be available as scheduled due to a major power outage affecting Newton, Auckland.
We sincerely apologise for this unexpected interruption to our services, and will keep you informed about the progress through updates on our Status page at https://t.co/uCgQXJl3Fh
@custardsqiggle Kia ora, thanks for your kind words! We actually do caption it (we do ~95% of possible content on TVNZ these days), so if you're watching it through the TV channel (TVNZ 1) - you'll be able to turn them on. Due to tech constraints, live captions aren't available on the TVNZ+ app.
Update: the outage has been resolved, and captioning services will resume on scheduled programming today, with the exception of Newshub Nation 2023 on Three, 9.55 - 10.55am.
⚠️ Major service outage ⚠️
We regret to inform you that we are currently unable to provide live-captioning on @TVNZ , @ThreeNewZealand and @Primetv_NZ due to a major and unprecedented outage with our service provider. More information is available here: https://t.co/YXB7URaJ3Z
Around 40% of us regularly use closed captions when watching TV. Accessibility is huge – but are our broadcasters getting it right?

@robert_cameron@TVNZ Kia ora Robert, there was a technical fault that prevented the captions we provided from being broadcast until 6.23. We are investigating the source of the disruption. Ngā mihi nui.
@robert_cameron Kia ora Robert, we are sorry to report that there is currently a technical issue at TVNZ's end preventing captions from being broadcast.
There's never been a better time to normalize open captions. Put subtitles on everything! They simply make movies more accessible and legible - something everyone that loves movies should want
@angelamayl@TVONENZ Sorry about captions missing for the first few minutes of 1 News at 6 on Monday night. TVNZ had a technical issue which they were able to rectify fairly promptly.
Able will be launching captions for @TVNZ's @Breakfaston1 from Monday 5 October! 🎉 We know it's been long-awaited by caption users, and we’re delighted to be providing this new service thanks to funding from @NZonAir. Check out our blog for more info.
