Sometimes, to focus on more explicit thinking, we ignore the subtle, often viewed as mundane part of thinking in think-alouds (such as pauses, hmms, hesitations, short wonderings/questions etc., ) These are essential & can be transformative for Ss in terms of dispelling misconceptions about
what effective thinking in math entails.
@Bell@Canada The fact that we do not have nation-wide free access to captioning landline phones is disgraceful. I can no longer call my aging mother bc she can’t hear on the phone,& doesn’t have a cell. We should have landline options. Do better.
Whether we like it or not, the assessment criteria we use in mathematics continually answers the question, What is mathematics? for our students each day.
We need to select and co-construct criteria with care.
