Long after his principal left office, he remained by his side.

And in his final journey, Kazaure was still there steady, dutiful, and unwavering.

Last night, I had a phone conversation with someone very close to late President #MuhammaduBuhari, and every word we shared touched my heart deeply.

He told me that everything I had written about Baba was true. He said, “I wish you had the opportunity to meet him in person. You would have cherished that moment for the rest of your life.” Those words stayed with me.

He described Baba Buhari as one of the simplest human beings he had ever encountered. Despite being a former Military Governor, Head of State, Minister of Petroleum, PTF Chairman, and a democratically elected President, he never allowed power to change his humanity. Titles never defined him, his character did.

I was told that he never rejected anyone who sought his time, no matter who introduced them whether it was security personnel or even a housemaid. Once you were brought before him, he would listen attentively, share jokes, speak gently, and offer fatherly advice. He treated everyone with dignity, whether big or small.

Even at his residence in Daura, he would not allow security to block public roads for his convenience. He believed government roads belong to the people. That was the kind of leader he was mindful, considerate, and grounded.

What touched me most was hearing that whatever you presented to him, he would respond with respect. He believed in building people, in nurturing others in a way that society would ultimately benefit. He believed leadership was about lifting others, not elevating oneself.

As the call went on, I felt a quiet sadness in my heart that I never had the chance to meet him physically. Though I was privileged to speak with him twice on the phone and I remember how soft, calm, and reassuring his voice was, I now realize how special a personal meeting would have been.
People like him come once in a lifetime.

May the gentle soul of Baba Muhammadu Buhari continue to rest in perfect peace. His simplicity, humility, and fatherly spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
