There’s renewed noise about SST vs GST. But it’s not about imported avocados or local bananas. It’s about visibility. And truth.

One senior @MOFmalaysia official recently claimed that under GST, the final consumer bears the tax, while SST shifts the burden to businesses—especially in B2B services.

That’s only half the story.

Yes, GST is a consumption tax, and yes, businesses claim input credits. But under SST, when tax is charged at the manufacturer or importer level, it doesn’t stay there. Every link along the chain—wholesaler, distributor, agent, retailer—adds a margin. And each quietly passes the tax along. In the end, the consumer still pays. The only difference? Under SST, you can’t see who’s making what.

Take a kilo of imported avocado.
Under both SST and GST, the consumer might still pay RM25 per kilo.
But with GST, every layer is documented. With SST, it’s a black box. And what happens when a supermarket raises its price for Australian avocado? The price for Cameron Highland grown avocados go up in tandem. Middlemen in both cases win and pass the costs to consumers.

And it’s not just avocados.

There are middlemen for bananas, for siakap, for Musang King durians.
There’s a healthy margin industry even around basic staples—just hidden from public view.

If the government is serious about eliminating rent-seeking in our economy, GST is the only credible tool.
That’s why it’s the global standard—from Singapore to Australia to India.

To pitch SST as a tax on luxury or on the wealthy is not just misleading.
It protects inefficiencies. It shelters opaque markups. It rewards the invisible middle.

Same fish. Same fruit. Same price.
But only one system tells the truth.

SST is a deliberate blind spot.
GST an unwelcome spotlight.
