We wish them every success in their future endeavors and look forward to welcoming them again in multilateral fora.
JUNE 20 is a day we embrace memories of our heroines and heroes who fell in the all out political and armed struggle for freedom. エリトリア#Eritrea’s peace and stability stands on the invincible citizenship and sovereignty foundation built with their blood, sweat and tears shade by millions of its inhabitants in cities, towns and - from afar and near- villages.
Prayers (ሰላትን ዱዓን) held at Asmara's Grand Mosque in mid-afternoon hours today in commemoration of Martyrs Day.
Presiding over the event, Eritrea's Mufti, Sheikh Salim Ibrahim Al-Mukhtar, stated that "June 20th is a day of pride and honour in which we pay tribute to our heroic Martyrs who ushered in the light of independence and sovereignty through their precious sacrifices". In the event, "it is the obligation of every citizen to support families of our Martyrs", Sheikh Salim further noted.

Excellent Read - The Light of Resilience: How the Candlelight Vigil Embodies #Eritrean Pride; by Kidane Shimendi
*"...It is the eve of June 20 - Martyrs Day - that brings the most visually stunning and emotionally charged tribute. As night falls, every household and street across Eritrea fills with the soft, flickering glow of candles. In this collective moment, the nation engages in a silent, sacred dialogue with the values and vision of its fallen heroes".
*"...On a community level, the candlelight vigil plays a vital role in social and mental well-being. It provides a shared space for collective grief, reflection, and ultimate triumph. As thousands of citizens stand shoulder-to-shoulder holding their flames, a powerful connection is forged between the living and the dead. The light brings individuals inward, connecting them directly to the core national values that define the Eritrean identity: unity, creativity, self-reliance, nationalism, and unbreakable comradeship".

Profile Q & A - Eritrea: A Model of a Primary Health Care System; Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa
Senior Officials (visiting and resident) of UN Development Agencies in Eritrea invariably portray a balanced, nuanced, and positive account of the development challenges and prospects as the interview (link below) illustrates.
*"...Eritrea’s model of largely free or highly subsidized health care is rooted in very strong principles of health equity. It is a notable achievement. However, any free or highly subsidized program usually faces financial, structural, and system-level challenges. To sustain it, the government must work on expanding physical infrastructure and domestic financing. If you want to maintain it, you have to sustain it, and to sustain it, you need a very stable financing process – whether through tax collection and subsidizing the health budget, or by increasing the health budget directly".
*"...I think that with more investment in health – and health has never been a cost; it is an investment that pays back quickly – if you have a healthy community and a healthy population, your people will be more productive. I was very impressed with this initial stage. Eritrea has 98% immunization coverage – you see that level in developed countries. Thus, investment in health is not a cost; in the long run, it contributes to the economic development of any country".

#Eritrea takes care of the families of the 65k Martyrs of the 30-years long revolutionary war, as well as the 20k Martyrs who fell in defense of the country during Ethiopia's 1998-2000 war of invasion. That's part of Eritrea's social justice programs.

#Eritrea: Statement by Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam at the Enhanced Interactive Dialogue; Geneva 15 June 2026
*"...Eritrea rejects the report before the Council as fundamentally flawed in its methodology, unsupported by independently verified information, and disconnected from realities on the ground. Its findings and conclusions therefore lack credibility and cannot serve as a reliable basis for informed deliberation or action by this Council".
*"...The Special Rapporteur argues that his mandate is indispensable as the only international mechanism responsible for monitoring Eritrea. This assertion disregards the existence of multiple United Nations mechanisms, including the Universal Periodic Review, treaty bodies, specialized agencies, and other intergovernmental processes through which all Member States, including Eritrea, are regularly assessed".
*"...Eritrea has maintained its sovereignty, preserved social stability, sustained public administration, and continued the delivery of essential services despite decades of conflict, sanctions, and external pressures. While acknowledging the need for continued progress, this reality is fundamentally inconsistent with the picture repeatedly presented through this mandate".
*:...When a country-specific mechanism persists despite sustained questions regarding its selectivity, methodology, and balance, it risks shifting from a tool of engagement into one of entrenchment. Rather than promoting constructive dialogue, it perpetuates a divisive process that has failed to command broad confidence among Member States.... Eritrea therefore rejects both the report and the resolution before the Council and reiterates its call for the termination of this mandate".
