The Rise and Fall Of Beauden Barrett.

I wanted to write this piece today, in honor, recognition and out of pure respect for one of New Zealand's greatest All Blacks.

I have always been a fan of Beaudy.

Crikey, our family home in New Zealand was just a few miles from the Barretts farm in Taranaki. We are literally neighbors, cuzzie bro's. 😀

Many people are chatting after Beauden's poor performance yesterday against the Stormers in Cape Town in the first All Blacks game of the 2026 Greatest Rivalry Tour.

Two time World Player of the Year, Rugby World Cup try winner, 145 appearances for the All Blacks, and 144 test caps. WOW.

His individual 830 pts tally scored in the All Blacks jersey since 2012 is more points scored than entire nations like Namibia, Spain, Portugal and Chile during that period. WOW.

They said that no-one was going to be able to fill the shoes of Dan Carter when he retired, but his immediate successor Beauden Barrett did just that.

Beauden debuted against Ireland in Hamilton in 2012. Since that first test he has gone on become a much loved, revered and respected All Black and rugby player across the world.

So why have things changed, and are we now seeing the very last of Beauden Barrett in the All Black jersey?

Throughout his career Beauden has been one of those players to suffer from some serious concussion incidents.

In 2021 against Ireland Beauden experienced a terrible concussion. He spent many months with migraine headaches, and having all kinds of other issues. This incident nearly ended his career.

Some who watch the game very closely might say since then things have changed.

The spacial awareness required when playing at No 10, the reluctance to dive in for that try saving tackle as a No 15, all things that crept into Beauden's game, slight, but noticeable.

Dan Carter retired from the All Blacks when he was 33 years and 7 months old, Andrew Merhtens 31 years and 3 months, Grant Fox 31 years 1 month.

Beauden is 35 years and two months old today.

Dave Rennie had emphasized pre the Stormers game that Beauden had been training the house down, even since the beginning of the Nations Championship games back in New Zealand in July.

Transferring that training field intent into match day performances is hard for many rugby players. Beauden appears to have lost the execution ability.

I have made mention a number of times prior to this tour commencing that players like Reiko Ioane, Anton Lienart Brown and Beauden Barrett should be left at home in New Zealand so that younger inexperienced players can get the opportunity to feel the pressures of this kind of tour.

Ruben Love is already 25 years old, so is Josh Jacomb. Beauden was first capped at the age of 21.

The All Blacks need a more aggressive approach to starting players career trajectory, especially in the backs than what we have been seeing in recent times.

Beauden could be used in an off field mentorship role to help and guide such inexperienced players.

One of the greatest things a professional athlete can do in their career is to retire under their terms. Beauden it is time, and as one of your biggest fans I for one don't want to see your legacy tainted in any way.

Now it's time, as in the photo below to inspire the young ones in a different way, to share your passion, love and understanding for our great game that will benefit generations to come.

It's time for the All Black coaches and Beauden to sit down, and to have one of those raw, honest conversations that they frequently tell us they have, and make the decision that is right for every one.

We love you Beauden Barrett.
