@ben_thorson1 She also actually recruited really well in the state of Missouri, without any previous ties to the state. So she knows how to build those relationships.
@ben_thorson1 Or looking from the other end... what type of coach does the UW WBB team want to avoid? Don't want a coach:
- using UW as a stepping stone
- figuring out how to run their own program
- who can't operate within the practical limitations of the program's resources.
@ben_thorson1 The thing I like the most about RP's hire is that she WANTS this challenge. She does not need this job. She's made money, run a program, was living in a great college town... she could have taken a year off & still been paid well enough at any mid-major.
@ben_thorson1 I actually really like the hire. Maybe not as flashy as some people wanted, but incredibly solid for building a foundation. Too much made (IMO) of Mizzou's recent record... teams have cycles, doesn't mean a coach that won in the past is suddenly incompetent.
@BadgerWBBHQ Probably not going to happen all of the time, but some special events would be cool. Two home FB games overlap with the WBB season. Host a game in the FH on the same date & offer free admission.
@barryisthedon No way of knowing for sure, but RP seems less likely to bounce for a different program if things do turn around. Another benefit of hiring a coach with her experience/profile.
@barryisthedon One aspect of the hire I like... RP must want the challenge & believe she can do something. She didn't need to take a job this season & she could have gone a different route if she did want to coach. Proactively picking our dumpster fire says something about her
@mustang1brady@BadgersBallKnow I go back & forth on HC experience. I was thinking of high profile asst. as still "in the box", but... I just want to not lose by 30 every night.
@mustang1brady@BadgersBallKnow Interesting - I see the opposite.
Kelsey had 10+ years as an asst., including 3 years at VaTech (made NCAAs all 3 years) & 5 yrs at blueblood Stanford
Moseley: 10+ yrs as asst., including long time at blueblood UConn; plus 3 years running her own shop.
@TamaraCoach I was in the UW Band at the same time you played. My close friends in the band & I would always play the Badgerball games. The Kohl Center had great energy then... Madison has been a WBB town & will be again. On Wis!
@jaypo1961 Yeah, totally agree. Just trying to inject some perspective...
- The year was a disappointment.
- They played an objectively challenging schedule that was a step-up from previous years.
- Year-end RPI has increased every season.
All three statements can be true.
@jaypo1961 Bennett had much more in the cupboard. Of course the WBB isn't close to the NCAAs, but you have to walk before you can run. Season expectations & program trajectory are related, but ultimately different concepts.
@jaypo1961 Just to point out that a program turn-around doesn't always follow a trajectory that is clear at the time. If we evaluated DB at the end of year 4, you would be looking at 2 first-round upset exits sandwiched between a season with 3 conf wins.
